The most common reason for this is cookie settings not being properly set. What is the URL for your forum and what are your cookie settings?

That all seems right... You can try clearing the cookies from your browser also. If that doesn't work, can you see if you can stay logged in from a different browser?

Hi,

I did a really stupid thing and I hope you'll be able to help me out.

I've been watching this thread because I'm having the same problem with auto login.

I read your reply and I cleared the cookies from my browser and that didn't help.

The url of my forum is http://www.naturallivingforums.com/forums/phpBB3

Then I went into ACP/cookies settings and this is what I had:

.naturallivingforums.com
phpbb3_aqnxr
/

This is where the stupid part comes in. Instead of just posting at this thread and asking for your help, I changed the setting for the cookie domain to .naturallivingforums.com/forums/phpBB3. Don't ask me why I changed that - for some reason I thought maybe it was supposed to have the path of the forum in it.

Now I can't login.

I sure hope you or someone else can help. I don't want to have start all over with a fresh phpBB3!!

Cookie domain should only be .yourdomain.com (always 2 dots) and the rest could go as path (notice there is a box to enter board path ;) ). If you cannot login since changing it by clearing the cookie and accepting a new one, then go to your database through something like phpmyadmin. Browse to the cookie domain in phpbb_config and alter it to what you had previously.

Once you can get in, it may be worth trying to change the cookie name and clearing cookies again. Setting the board path could help also, although / is the default even if your forum is not in the root.

I was able to login simply by clearing the cookie again. I have changed the cookie domain setting to what I had previously.

The rest of your instructions I am having a little trouble understanding:

1) change the cookie name: can I use any name and is there a specific format I need to use?

2) setting the board path: after the / that is in there now, do I add forums/phpBB3?
In other words should cookie path now be /forums/phpBB3

I'm a little gun shy after locking myself out, so I just want to be sure I understand perfectly before trying anything again.

Many thanks for your help.

It can pretty much be anything. You can use underscores, but no dots or spaces.

Yes, that is the path. It may help to set that.

Do you have automatic logins enabled in the ACP?

That did it - thank you so much! I can't believe how wonderful the support is at this board. :D

Hi - I went back to my board and it is back to not allowing me an auto login.

Could the problem possibly be because I have registered several users from my own computer?

Also, where do I set up Allow Auto Login at my ACP? I can't seem to locate it. Maybe that's the problem :?:

It should not block autos because you have multiple accounts.
As for you set up ACP, you should get a message that asks you if you want to remember your password. Click remember.

Hello and thank you for your reply.

I regret I don't understand what you mean by this:

"As for you set up ACP, you should get a message that asks you if you want to remember your password. Click remember"

I don't get any message like that. Could you tell me exactly where I should go in my phpBB3 ACP to set it to allow automatic log in?" I am still a little new to this so I need detailed instructions.

Thank you

bvigorda: Automatic login for the ACP is prevented for security reasons. You will have to reenter your password once per session. As far as the regular login, are you meaning that the username and password are not prefilled or that after you check the box you are not kept logged in when you visit again?

romel: Yes, you need to change your server settings and cookie settings when you move the board.
Cookie domain: .mynewdomain.com <-- always use 2 dots
Cookie name: phpbb_cookie (assign a new random name here)
Cookie path: can be either / or /boardpath when your forum is at mynewdomain.com/boardpath
Cookie secure: probably no
