One other thing I noticed...you said
When I sign on and check the box, then spend some time at the board, then log off and revisit the board, the username and password are not filled in and I need to check the box again
When you click logout the cookie is normally destroyed and you have to login again next visit. To persist your login cookie simply exit the browser without logging out.
Thanks Dan - some people just don't get the concept
So basically this is a 'Keep me logged in for X amount of time' but without the choice of time. How come its explained as auto login then.....? May i ask.
You can stay logged into a site by not logging out and just closing browser anyhow. Why add a check box that implies something completely different.??

I dont mean this funny just has confused me to why this is done. The tick box if anything should just be for a 'Keep me logged in'
The direction of auto logins and in the ACP where it states that when folk return to the board they will automatically login. Well this is not the case at all, they never logged out to automatically login.
(as if the cookie session doesnt expire they are effectively permanently logged in, or to the length i set in the ACP, this is nothing to do with being logged in again........as is suggested)
Can someone please clarify this for me.

Thnkyou for anyones time.

You will be logged in until you logout. Don't specifically logout.

I understand not to log out.

But as i say the feature is not what it states and has caused confusion to the members at the site. And from the description given in the ACP it also reads as though it should automatically log you in.

As i say this is not really a feature as if you dont log out of any site and dont clear your cookies you will stay logged in. No need for the checkbox at all.

The feature is made out to be a auto login feature. This is what i wanted clarifying mate. As i said before leaving yourself logged into a site to return to it logged in is not a auto log in feature.

I mean no offense in my questions at all. Just i have people asking me why and would like to be able to answer them properly......

Thankyou for replying. I do appreciate it.

When you go to the site, you don't need to log in if you check the box and don't log out. If you don't check the box, you will have to login when the session expires even if you don't log out. People wouldn't like it if they could never explicitly logout.

Ok mate. Well thankyou for your time. And i have been informed of my mistake and do apologise. Didnt realise sorry.

Can you tell me if its possible to change the wording of the checkbox selection...? And if so where and how??

If you dont mind pls.
As already have had a few members approaching asking why they cant auto login. And as it is a feature to keep you logged in, and not log in for you automatically i would just like to change the wording if at all possible.

Thanks again mate

It does log you in automatically. You don't have to fill in a username and password.

But if you wish to change the language, it is in language/en/common.php. Change this:

Code: Select all

'LOG_ME_IN' => 'Log me on automatically each visit',
To this:

Code: Select all

'LOG_ME_IN' => 'Make it so I do not have to re-enter username and password if I do not log out',

Or whatever language you feel appropriate.

Ok thankyou for that.

And as i say i just want to clarify for people what this actually does. As when it is named as a auto login feature people are expecting to be able to log out and when they come back to the page be automatically logged in again.

I would prefer it to say - 'Check this to keep me logged in' or something to the affect. Then people may not try to use it as a auto login as i describe there. Which as i said earlier is what it implies at the moment.

Thankyou for clearing that up for me, and thankyou for your help on how to solve this. It is very much appreciated.

I'm having trouble with this feature as well, and there is a note in the Administration Control Panel/Server configuration/Cookie settings that says, "...If you do need to change any do so with care, incorrect settings can prevent users logging in." Does this mean if I try changing the settings, and set them incorrectly, that NO users, including Admin users, can log in? (to change the settings)? That's a scary thought. If that happens, then what file do I need to edit?

My forum was set up before the nameservers were resolved, so there are still a couple of places where I have an IP address as a value, rather than the site path name. Is that a problem?

Here are my settings (though I'll use "MyDomainName.com" rather than the real one, and will use some x's in the IP address rather than show the real one.)

The board software is installed at MyDomainName.com/phpBB3

Server Configuration
- Server Settings
---- Domain Name: 67.199.xxx.xxx

- Security Settings
---- Allow Persistent logins: Yes

- Load Settings
---- Session length: 7200 sec

- Cookie Settings
----Cookie domain: 67.199.xxx.xxx
----Cookie name: phpbb3_gdvwl
----Cookie path: /
----Cookie secure: Disabled

Thanks in advance for any help with these issues!

I also have the problem where users, as well as myself will suddenly "not be logged in" after just a few clicks.

I also have the problem where when you tell the browser to "Remember Login", it really DOESN'T remember your login/password the next time you go in.

I have read this entire thread up to and including page 9. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your board's URL: TewksburyIssues.org
Version of phpBB3: 3.0.2
Was this a fresh install or a(n) update/upgrade/conversion (please be specific)? Conversion then upgrade.
UBB.classic 6.03 -> phpbb2.0.22 -> phpbb3.0.2
Did you use an automated wizard provided by your host to install phpBB? No.
MODs you have installed: None, also using default style
When the problem started: A day after 3.0.2 was running (three days ago).
Your level of expertise (be honest): intermediate

Additionally, you may wish to provide the following (where applicable)
Template(s) used: prosilver
Language(s) used: english
Version of PHP used: PHP Version 4.4.7
Database and version used: mysql 4.1.22

Cookie settings
Cookie Domain: .tewksburyissues.org
Cookie Name: phpbb3_tewksbury
Cookie Path: /phpbb3 I tried "/" and "/phpBB3" without quotes

Oh, and by the way, the "Knowlege Base" article on cookies should probably be revisited as it mentions "script path" but the cookie setting in BB3 don't seem to have a "script path" setting. There is "cookie path", but no "script path":

I have the same problem as every other person in this thread
my settings are correct, I think
I read every thread on that topic but none of the mentioned tips worked out

but now I found out something interesting:
when I log in, with the autologin-option checked, and then look at the browser-cookies, everything is all right:
the _sid, _k and _u cookies are filled with the right values (I think)
but when I visit the Forum in a new tab or close the Browser and visit it again the cookie-contents change:
_k = null
_u = 1
_sid = same as before
the result: I`m not longer logged in, the cookie-settings are wrong and so I do not "auto-login", because the forum could not identify me with these false values in the cookies

the real strang thing is: until yesterday everything worked fine. I do not change anything, no setting, nothing in the database, simply nothing. It simply stopped working
it´s really strange

I hope this will help

@ dtleahy: Now that the DNS has resolved, please change the domain name in server settings to MyDomainName.com, script path /phpBB3; change cookie domain to .MyDomainName.com, path /phpBB3, and slightly alter cookie name to force a new cookie immediately.

@ biffstallion: It looks like your cookies are being set with path /phpbb3 while the board is at /phpBB3 (note capitalization). Can you change this and slightly alter your cookie name to force a new cookie? Oh, and the Knowledge Base article you linked is written for phpBB2.

@ Liutasil: Can you give the URL for your board and cookie settings so that someone can take a look at what you are describing? Also, have you made any browser changes, server/host made any changes? Things don't usually just stop for no reason... unless there was already something amiss. :)

I fixed the problem by restoring an old database-backup
