Re: Log me on automatically each visit, don't work

Post by heimedall »

Hello, can someone help me out with this, I remember in the beginning of this someone saying "always two dots" so does that mean .co.uk domains don't have the start dot? And what about sub domains?

My Forum: http://supernaturalatlantis.amuseingwriters.co.uk
My cookie settings:
Cookie domain: supnaturalatlantis.amuseingwriters.co.uk
Cookie name: phpbb3_snat
Cookie path: /
Cookie secure: Disabled.

Persistant login is enabled on my acp.

Thanks

i have the same problem, too. My forum remembers members if their browser are Firefox. But via IE, it just asks for logging in again and again.

My Forum. http://www.thekonsey.co.cc
My Cookie Settings:
Cookie domain: thekonsey.0fees.net
Cookie name: phpbb3_pasre
Cookie path: /
Cookie secure: Disabled.

Persistant login is enabled on my acp.

@heimedall: I'm not ignoring you, I just simply don't have an answer. Your forum, when I checked just after that posting, was definitely not setting a cookie when I visited.

@emirduman: The domain you access the board from and the domain you have set in server settings and cookie settings need to be the same. If your members visit your board from http://thekonsey.co.cc then the cookie domain should be thekonsey.co.cc rather than the 0fees domain.

It is set to use cookies - I don't understand why it's not.

Ah, I just caught something above. Can you double check this?

Shouldn't it be supernaturalatlantis there? Or is it just a typo in copying over here?

That's just my typo, I knew the settings before I posted so I just typed them in. it is actually supernaturalatlantis.amuseingwriters.co.uk

Well, it was a shot. ;)
Let's also try giving your cookie domain the leading dot. This seems to work in most cases.
Cookie domain: .supernaturalatlantis.amuseingwriters.co.uk
And then change your cookie name slightly to force a new cookie for everyone. ex: phpbb3_snatl

Cookie secure: Disabled

I started having persistent log-in problems a few months ago with v2.0.23, now with the new v3.0.x I just installed.

The last v2.0.23 forum I installed simply would not log me in - for any reason - in IE, but I used it successfully with FireFox and Opera. After I installed v.3.0.x I could log in to that with IE, but that only lasts a few minutes. If I left it for a while and come back, I have to log in again.

Ditto if I am active (in the v3 Forum) - even as Admin - in one Tab and open a new Tab the Forum requires me to log in afresh - most of my earlier v2 Forums keep the login alive and if called in a new Tab the Forum login is still persistent.

I tried deleting all my cookies and logging in again, the Forum (v3) does not create a new cookie. I tried creating a new (empty) cookie file, and logging in again, nothing is placed in the cookie file.

Very annoying, and I would like to give my users persistence... any ideas?

Change these to the following:
Cookie domain: .caribbeanavenue.com
Cookie name: caribave_crapi

Both the _aviation in the domain that isn't part of how you access your site and the dots in the cookie name prevented cookies from being set.

Been there, done that, no change. In fact, I left the browser for about 10 minutes to respond to an email and it logged me out again.

I can't find any settings in IE, XP to make any difference. I even tried looking at the OS/IE with TweakUI but that didn't show me anything useful.

I just checked, and you still have a dot in the cookie name. Dots do not work in cookie names. Replace it with an underscore.

You're an Officer and a Gentleman, Sir... it works correctly now. I assumed you were referring to the dot at the start of the cookie name!!

Many thanks... Jim

Well, back to square one, minus one.

After "solving" my problem last night. this morning I opened the forum and found myself with a Log In prompt. So I logged in, and the interim Refresh / linked screen for the Index page came up - with the Log Out link at top right. So I clicked on the link, and was delivered to the Index page - with the Log In link at top right, still out in the cold.

I repeated, and it repeated.

So I repeated again, and this time waited for the Refresh to take me there. It repeated.

So I repeatedagain, but this time I clicked on the link to the Admin ACP, but it repeated anyway - I was back to the Log In, this time with an ACP authorisation warning.

Firefox not only keeps me logged in, it pre-inserts my password for me... same for my third browser Opera and my fourth browser Google Chrome.

Two questions:

1. What can I do to IE to stop this idiocy (apart from deleting it from my hard drive), and...

2. Why have we not all discarded IE already for the ridiculous, time-wasting garbage that it is? This stupid humongous bloatware browser STILL checks for a proxy server EVERY TIME I TRY TO LOAD A PAGE!!! IE gave me so much trouble and waste of time loading my email that I use it now only for web searches, and it seems I am about to stop using it even for that!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
