Mass e-mail throws 501 5.5.4 Invalid Address

Post by Aubs010 » Sat Dec 15, 2007 11:05 pm

Hi all,

Hope someone may be able to assist, I've carried out numerous searches and not been able to find a solution. I do try and find the info myself before finally resorting to asking for help! :)

I've had this problem throughout the beta releases and it still happens. Using Mass e-mail, I keep getting the error below:
E-mail error
» EMAIL/PHP/mail()
/forums/adm/index.php

[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/functions_messenger.php on line 410: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 501 5.5.4 Invalid Address
SMTP is not enabled on the server (I cannot telnet to it at least!).

There are only three users on the board, as I am currently testing things. All three accounts have valid email addresses (they are my own accounts!). IF I send an email to each user individually, it works fine, but if I have more than one user in the "Send to users:" box OR select one of the "Send to group:" options, the error occurs.

Current setup:

phpBB 3.0.0
No mods installed at all. Package is as the original complete download.
Not upgrade, completely new install.
E-mail function name: mail
E-mail package size: 50
Use SMTP server for e-mail: No (therefore all SMTP settings not completed)

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2 (with all updates available)

PHP Version 5.2.1
Internal Sendmail Support for Windows enabled

Any additional info required will be supplied.

Thanks for reading.

http://www.webhost4life.com/kb/question.php?qstId=194
This is a error in your code.
You have incorrect email format in the From address or To address header.
Correct address format: abc@abc.com <Email_Address_Name_Here>
Incorrect address format: abc@abc.com <>
The problem I'm having is while using the Mass Email function of phpBB to email more than one person. It is fine if I email one person.

Could it be that phpBB is not using the correct syntax, like abc1@abc.com <abc1>,, abc2@abc.com <abc2>

i.e. two commas instead of one, or something else? I also note that phpBB is NOT putting the NAME part in abc@abc.com <this_part_is_missing>.

Thanks all. Hope someone can help!

Sorry, I did not fill in the Support Request Template:

Your board's URL: not relevant
Version of phpBB3: 3.0.0
Was this a fresh install or a(n) update/upgrade/conversion (please be specific)? Fresh install
Was this an install through your host?no, installed on my own server (Win Server 2003 standard)
MODs you have installed:None
When the problem started:previous RC versions

Template(s) used:ProSilver standard (not modified at all)
Language(s) used:British English
Version of PHP used:5.2.1
Database and version used:MySQL Server 5.0

Hopefully that is sufficient. Please ask if any more info is needed.

Thanks,

Aubs

I'm having the same problem with 3.0.2. Multiple addresses fail with the same error.

Same problem here... :(

One person is fine. Multiple persons or a group = error.

Same problem
E-mail error

Is there not a fix?

This problem occurs when sending out a mass email (testing, only have 3 email addresses). No problem sending out mail for Welcome Message, Activation, etc.

Same issue here.

E-mail error
» EMAIL/PHP/mail()
/phpbb3/adm/index.php

[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/functions_messenger.php on line 1565: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 501 5.5.4 Invalid Address

I've done some reading and some people on other forums have said this is most likely due to the host and their SMTP. I have no clue personally, but a quick google search will show you results like that.

Someone else mentioned to not choose to send it right away and let it fall into queue and that might help. I tried that but still got the error.

Anyone know if there was an update to this or possible fix/work around?
Thanks,
Dan

I would guess that this is a problem with how the windows server smtp is setup. nobody else seems to be having this problem.

I would ask somewhere that knows about how windows servers/smtp etc are setup.
most people do not use this for phpbb.
most people use the standard *nix server with apache, php etc. phpbb email systems work just fine
using php mail on those servers.

On Windows servers, PHP uses SMTP to send the mail. I have seen before where the mass-mail function of PHP uses the incorrect format when sending to SMTP. It is better to specify SMTP in the Email settings. Then there is one-less interface to worry about.
