What is that sign "cron"

Post by sotis » Thu Jan 17, 2008 4:14 pm

Does anybody know why I see a little sign “cron” on the bottom of the page. I think this is something from overal_footer.html

Hi sotis,

Is this board an install of your own, and which browser are you using. Do have the same displayed in the footer using other browsers?

[BUG] Re: What is that sign "cron"

Post by silexian » Sat May 31, 2008 1:49 am

I think this is a bug in

where the following code of viewforum.php cannot assign the good value to the path :

Code: Select all

// Do the forum Prune thang - cron type job ...
if ($forum_data['prune_next'] < time() && $forum_data['enable_prune'])
{
        $template->assign_var('RUN_CRON_TASK', '<img src="' . append_sid($phpbb_root_path . 'cron.' . $phpEx, 'cron_type=prune_forum&f=' . $forum_id) . '" alt="cron" width="1" height="1" />');
}
But i don't know how to correct it

Its searching for an image cron, and when the image is not found, displaying the alternative text defined
'" alt="cron" width="1" height="1" />');

It is happening on this board because cron.php is returning text/html which is not an image and therefore firefox uses the alternate text. Try uploading a fresh copy of cron.php.

Hi ToonArmy,
Agreed the code's doing what it ought to do, but there are a couple of problems:
1. Your users don't understand what 'cron' means which isn't surprising: most people don't have a *nix background. It would be more helpful if the message was 'autoprune is on' or something. (assuming it's aimed at the user at all)
2. If the image had shown up it's
width="1" height="1"
so it's an image 1 pixel by 1 pixel, which is going to be kind of hard to spot!

The image is meant to be hard to spot (even not to be seen at all!); sole purpose of it integrated in overall_footer is that the script has the chance to be run frequently.

It is not really a problem, if the alt text is showing up all the time the forum is rather broken and some confusing text at the bottom will tell the and us what is playing up.

The image is also transparent so it doesn't show up at all.;)
