MySQL Server Has Gone Away on Localhost

Post by xmave » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:18 am

Your board's URL: localhost
Version of phpBB3: 3.0.0, n/a anyway.
This is a CONVERSION from phpBB2 to phpBB3.
Install through my host? I don't think so, it was through me? On my computer?
MODs you have installed: None.
When the problem started: Midway through conversion process, read below.
Template(s) used: None, it's in the conversion process. Nothing to do with it.
Language(s) used: British English...
Version of PHP used: 5.2.5
Database and version used: Not sure what this is. mysql?

I get to step 16 or 17 of the conversion from bb2 to bb3, when it gets to posts ( there are more than 200,000 posts, it gets to about 180,000ish ) and then it brings me to a general error page which reads:
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

MySQL server has gone away [2006]

SQL

UPDATE phpbb_config SET config_value = 'a:3:{s:4:\"step\";s:42:\"&current_table=15&skip_rows=178954\";s:12:\"table_prefix\";s:6:\"phpbb_\";s:3:\"tag\";s:7:\"phpbb20\";}' WHERE config_name = 'convert_progress'

This is on my localhost! What should I do?

I don't understand whether this is on your local pc or on a webhost.

Please fill out the Support Request Template.

If it is a webhost the site could be timing out too quickly before it has finished but I am not entirely sure until you fill out the support request template.

Oh ok.

If it is your local pc can you check that your mysql service isn't dropping out half way through or it isn't working properly.

Would you mind providing the details of which software package you are using and what the general specifications of what your pc is in case this is attributing to the problem.

Erm, not sure how to check if it's dropping out halfway, I looked in the logs but none say anything out of the usual.

I'm using wamp server, my PC with windows xp has 2gb of ram and plenty of space. I don't think that's attributing to the problem though

Ok the pc spec doesn't look bad but also depends on the cpu you use.

What version of wamp server are you using and is it the latest??

Does the wamp support forums have any similar problems on this? http://www.wampserver.com/phorum

I am trying to have a look but the search function on their site seems to be a bit on the slow side.

Maybe even submit a thread there for help and see which one can help you out the most.

cpu is a core 2 duo dual core at 1.86.

the wamp forums brought up no results on this. I suppose I will make a topic there as well, but any help here is still very much appreciated (and needed ;))

Yeah ok.

Let's exclude the pc as a problematic factor then due to the spec's being more than adequate.

Would you mind backing up your database and putting it into a new database and try the conversion on a new database with the content with a new board to see whether that will work in case something didn't set up correctly.

Just interested but whats the url of your site??

Haha, ok well that last one confused me greatly. But I'll do that as a last resort, it's a very large database and importing / exporting / doing anything is time consuming and it will probably be in vain.

As to the url of the board, there is none, it's on my computer right now and nothing on the website. But of course it has come from somewhere, that somewhere is thesaltinez.com.

Fair enough.

Sorry I have confused you a little.

The reason why I said what I said is sometimes things don't propagate correctly.

If you don't want to have to re-create the database as yet why not just create a new phpBB3 install and put it on a separate prefix as the other board and see what errors you obtain which should hopefully be none.

I am sorry to put it bluntly but the best course of action is to eliminate what is going on.

I don't quite understand but why didn't you do the conversion, etc on your webhost? Was it due to space restrictions or another restriction on the space?

Good luck with it all.

I didn't do it on my webhost for many reasons. It is much more convenient to work with the big database without having to work with it remotely on the web, uploading and downloading and such.

Also, I was getting the blank page during convert when doing it on my webhost so they suggested doing an offline convert.

And mainly, my webhost only allows one mysql database, making it very cumbersome ;)

Ok fair enough. Would you like access to try it on another webhost and then you can just transfer the files back across?

I would be happy to give you access to my site to allow you to get this done and then you can transfer the data back across to your site when happy.

Thanks, but as I've mentioned the database is quite large, a gb if that, and uploading it is very tedious. Also, I think it should be better doing it on my localhost where I have full access to settings, the server, and other things?

I am sorry but because it crapped itself during the conversion process that you will have to redo the conversion and everything because the files haven't been created and propogated so I am sorry you are going to have to go to the last resort to resolve it.

If you are still having problems after this let me know.

Try reading this

http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/offline-conversions/

This is the way I did mine and it worked no bother after my host kept dropping the connection during the conversion.

You wont need to do all those steps but the bigdump bit is particularly useful.
