MySQL server has gone away [2006] - Large posts

Post by Slewey » Tue Mar 04, 2008 9:39 am

Your board's URL: http://www.autodetailing.nl/
Version of phpBB3: 3.0.0
Was this a fresh install or a(n) update/upgrade/conversion (please be specific)?
Fresh phpBB 3.0 (NL) install downloaded from http://www.phpbb.nl/downloads/

MODs you have installed: none
When the problem started: Since the beginning

Additionally, you may wish to provide the following (where applicable)
Template(s) used: Self-made
Language(s) used: Dutch
Version of PHP used: PHP Version 5.2.5
Database and version used: MySQL 5.0.45-community

Error message:

Code: Select all

SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

MySQL server has gone away [2006]

SQL

SELECT bbcode_id, bbcode_tag, bbcode_helpline FROM phpbb_bbcodes WHERE display_on_posting = 1 ORDER BY bbcode_tag

BACKTRACE

FILE: includes/db/mysql.php
LINE: 158
CALL: dbal->sql_error()

FILE: includes/functions_display.php
LINE: 820
CALL: dbal_mysql->sql_query()

FILE: posting.php
LINE: 1338
CALL: display_custom_bbcodes()
*Error message is not always the same.

I'm having problems with posting large messages, including images from an external host.
When I try to post a message which contains more then about 10 images it takes to long to process the message and then the MySQL server times out.
This usually happens with external images loading from sites like Photobucket and Imageshack, where I think their server takes longer to respond.

An example of a post which I couldn't load;
http://autodetailing.nl/viewtopic.php?p=1587#p1587
The images are now placed in the post with a URL, but I actually want them to load between the image tags.

The mysql.connect_timeout on my host is set at: 60
My guess is that phpBB3 isn't able to process the images before the mysql times out. I have no problems with phpbb2 boards which I host on the same server. Is this a new "feature" of phpBB3 where it process the post/images before updating the database?

I tried contacting my host, but it's not possible for them to edit the mysql connection timeout, because this will affect there whole server.
I also tried to ask this question at the dutch phpBB board, but unfortunately no response :(
Hope someone here can help me out.

I too am experiencing this problem with a slitghly diff error:

Code: Select all

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

MySQL server has gone away [2006]

SQL

UPDATE phpbb_config SET config_value = 'a:3:{s:4:\"step\";s:40:\"&current_table=15&skip_rows=8032\";s:12:\"table_prefix\";s:6:\"phpbb_\";s:3:\"tag\";s:7:\"phpbb20\";}' WHERE config_name = 'convert_progress'

BACKTRACE

FILE: includes/db/mysql.php
LINE: 158
CALL: dbal->sql_error()

FILE: includes/functions.php
LINE: 148
CALL: dbal_mysql->sql_query()

FILE: installatsni/install_convert.php
LINE: 1540
CALL: set_config()

FILE: installatsni/install_convert.php
LINE: 1418
CALL: install_convert->save_convert_progress()

FILE: installatsni/install_convert.php
LINE: 203
CALL: install_convert->convert_data()

FILE: installatsni/index.php
LINE: 402
CALL: install_convert->main()

FILE: installatsni/index.php
LINE: 274
CALL: module->load()
Obviously makes conversion from phpBB2 to phpBB3 difficult if not impossible. :(
