403 Forbidden on posting.php

Postby Yatagratsu » Sun Mar 09, 2008 2:09 am

Your board's URL: http://www.yatazen.com/forum
Version of phpBB3: 3.0
Was this a fresh install or a(n) update/upgrade/conversion (please be specific)? No. It happened out of the blue and I have not touched the /forum directory in weeks.
Was this an install through your host? It was manual by myself months ago.
MODs you have installed: Automatic Redirect.
When the problem started: Today while trying to reply to a post.

Template(s) used: VistaX, Prosilver2
Language(s) used: British English
Version of PHP used: 4.4.7
Database and version used: 4.1.22-standard-log

Suddenly today, my forum wouldn't allow anyone to post due to "not having sufficient privileges to posting.php". When pushing the submit button, my users and I get the following error:

Code: Select all
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /forum/posting.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.39 Server at www.yatazen.com Port 80

I have checked the file attributes of said file and it is correct, being at 644. I tried using various other numbers, including 755, but it did not help. I also attempted removing/editing the .htaccess file, but it made no difference.

I even replaced posting.php and the .htaccess file from a fresh download of phpBB3.0 and it helped none.

When searching on Google, I came across many people having the same problem, but none of their solutions worked.

I also attempted to use the restore system to restore a backup of when it worked, but it also did not help.

Cans someone please be of assistance? I'm at my whits end.

Also my problem.. contacted my host support.. They say it's not mod_rewrite.
It's something that I'll need to contact to phpbb.

It always seems I find these "unknown and unresolved" bugs without even trying :D

But to be serious here, I really do need to get this resolved. I'm in the middle of building up the site and the forum is a very important part of it.

This morning I backed up my DB, uninstalled the phpBB directory, reinstalled, and restored the DB backup, and the problem is still there!

My host says it's nothing they did, but if it's nothing on my end, it must be on theirs.

I really don't know what to do now.

It's your hosts mod_security being tripped by something you're writing.

You can work out what it is by halving the text, posting it and seeing what happens. If it works, the trigger word is in the bit you didn't post, and if it bugs out, it's in the bit you did post. Keep halving until you work out what it is and ask your hosts if they can allow it.

Thanks for the response!
The thing is, it does not matter what's in the post. I've tried a varity of words, even just random letters, and it does not work :(

Could it possibly be my host made a mistake using mod_security so that it's disallowing all of this?

Could be. Drop them a line and see what's up.
Also check the permissions of that file. It should be CHMOD 644

The file's attributes are 644.
I'll see what my host says.

What ever happened, did it get sorted out?

I have this same issue now, so if you have any help it is appreciated!

However, I created a new forum category (Name it important message, and made the description just to alert my users of the issue as its the only way to get in touch with them) and I can make posts in the new forum just fine!!! I cant still post anything in the other sections as I get the same 403 error..

I'm getting the same 403 error, although ours just started this weekend. And it doesn't happen all the time, just when we post anything with the [url] or [img] tags....

Help on this would be appreciated! :D

ok well after a little digging it is apparently the mod_security like was stated above.... there is a work around by creating a .htaccess file in your forum directory with the following:

Code: Select all
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off

I had the same kind of problem when ever someone tried to post a link to their site on freewebs, or posting an image hosted there.

Adding this to the htaccess file got around it.

What is mod_security? a php setting I assume?
