How do I find the database information I need to install?

Post by Krazykikikat »

I'm trying to install phpBB3, and I'm stuck on the part asking about my database settings. I went to live support for my host, and tried to ask about it. The representative guided me to the MySQL management on the control panel, and then ended the conversation, before I had a chance to realize that the information I needed probably wasn't there. I really don't feel like waiting in that queue again, especially when they're all eager to get you off the line and move on.
I don't understand databases. At all. I don't mess with them. Thanks to the simplicity of phpBB, I've never had to. But now I'm not at all sure that the information I need is in the MySQL management area. Does anyone use iPower, who would know about this stuff?

This is what my database management page looks like: http://kikikrazykat.net/databases.bmp
Do you see the required information in there?

Thank you.

Edit: Could/should I start a new database for phpBB3?

You have to create a database which phpBB will populate with tables.
When you create it you will have a name for it, a username and a password.
That is the information you enter on the installation page.

You might also want to search on here for ipower. They aren't the greatest.

Okay... it also says I need to enter DNS thingy... how do I find that out? And the server port?
And when I tried to make a new database called phpBB3, it said one already exists. 0_o But it's not on that page.

The DSN is usually the word localhost but not always. Your hosts will know what it should be. Leave the server port if you don't know what it is.

If it thinks there's a database called phpBB3 already....call it something else instead?

I named the database bb3, the login is kikikraz.
I entered that and the password, left the prefixes as phpbb_, put "localhost" into DNS, and left the port empty.
I got this:
Could not connect to the database, see error message below.
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

That means some of the information is wrong.

Sometimes the database and username have an extra bit added (like the user account name), or localhost is wrong.

I've been working on this forum for about three days, and it's one hang-up after another. I want to cry.
I've pushed forward, but it seems I've hit a brick wall this time. iPower is being supremely unhelpful, and I have no idea how to find out any of this database information without contacting them again. Ugh. I wonder if I asked if they'd even KNOW the answer. Guess I've got to get back in the queue.

Like I said, even if you sort it out, it might only be the beginning of your problems with that host.

We can not really recommend a host, but we do recommend that you visit WebHostingTalk

Ah! Smart little support representative gave me the right answers! Took him a good five minutes, but he got them. Geez. What an ordeal. Well thank you very much for your help, I'll be sure to post here in the future when I need any phpBB related help.

I'd love to know what you were able to do to fix this error. I'm getting the same thing:
Could not connect to the database, see error message below.
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

I've double and triple checked all my mysql information, DB name, username, password, everything.
