Which database Server shall I select?

Post by Sascha Mueller »

Hello together,

I have a Debian etch server with three database server installed:
  1. MySQL Lite
  2. MySQL
  3. MySQL(i)
Which database server shall I select? Number 1 is not so powerfull I think, but what is the different between number 2 and 3? And is number 3 compatible with phpBB3?

Thx a lot for helping!

Nice greetings

Sascha

I guess you mean SQLite as the first option, right? I would only choose this if the board is for me alone and I had no other options. SQLite is primarily a database for embedded systems or applications that just need to store some data in a structured way and don't need multiple people to be able to write to it simultanously.

About MySQLi: From the requirements:

Code: Select all

# MySQL 3.23 or above (MySQLi supported)
MySQLi is intented for MySQL server with version 4.1 or newer.

It's MySQL Server version 5.0.51a

Can I take MySQL(i)? I think this is faster as MySQL ...

Right?

Well, performance-wise the difference is AFAIK not all that great and since you ask I assume you're not going to build a board for thousands of people and with some elaborate server infrastructure anyway ;-) If you have the option, IMO going with MySQLi isn't a bad choice esp. since you're using a >MySQL4.1 database server.
