Is it necessary in phpBB to close a topic if it gets too long?

Post by Bruce Banner » Fri May 19, 2017 2:42 pm

I was told on a forum that uses another software that it's necessary to close and reopen a chat thread every 1000 posts to keep traffic in check and to lower the risk of lags. Is the same thing true for phpBB, or can a topic stay open forever?

It is entirely up to you. Never heard of it being a problem with phpBB.

I have topics with well over 10k replies - even over 35k replies and there are no noticeable issues.

the only thing drawing resources is the 1 page of that thread that is currently being viewed

that's why we have Pagination

massively long threads are very popular, forum goers love em and Admins should have no fear of them

I heard this close and reopen a chat thread every 1000 posts stuff before, it's a myth 8-)

Not entirely true

it only uses resources when its clicked and the info is required by the browser once its open/downloaded then its using nothing

I must say though the OP mentions chat thread...are you talking about a chat room or just a topic on a forum?

If you are talking about a chat room then yes some chat rooms refresh everything open in the window every few seconds which will use more resources

but phpBB doesn't have a chat room and that would then be an extension issue!

can the OP clarify whether you mean a chat room or just a topic on a forum
