Export as CSV of cyrillic doesn't produce legible results

Post by denis4o »

I cannot find the support template anywhere so I will just go ahead and put it in plain text since I have no issues with the other functionalities of 3.1.2.

When trying to export the list of the PMs, most of which are in Cyrillic I get illegible symbols.

However the xml export produces a good result.

Any suggestions what might have went wrong?

Maybe whatever you are using to view the CSV data isn't setup with a Cyrillic character set?

I am using MS Excel and it set up for cyrillic. The same works fine with exports from 3.0.12

Would have saved time if you had pointed that out in the first post. Seems it may be a bug. If/when the phpBB Bug Tracker comes back online you could see if it has been reported already and if not submit an issue.

Please disregard this topic. It turns out this is a known issue in MS Excel where it doesn't automatically set the character encoding of the CSV files to UTF-8.

Here is the workaround:
  1. Save the exported file as a csv
  2. Open Excel
  3. Import the data using Data-->Import External Data --> Import Data
  4. Select the file type of "csv" and browse to your file
  5. In the import wizard change the File_Origin to "65001 UTF" (or choose correct language character identifier)
  6. Change the Delimiter to comma
  7. Select where to import to and Finish
