This will remove all of the problems on your forum.

  1. Backup all board files and the database of your board.
  2. Download the full package.
  3. Unzip to your desktop and open the phpBB3 directory.
  4. Remove (delete) the config.php file, and the ext, /images and /files directories from the package.
  5. Via FTP or SSH delete everything from your board installation on the server EXCEPT for the config.php file, and the ext, /files, /images, and /store directories.
  6. Via FTP or SSH upload the remaining files and directories (from step 4 above) to the root of your board installation on the server overwriting the existing files.
  7. In your browser go to http://www.example.com/yourforum/instal ... update.php
  8. Let that run to completion.
  9. Via FTP or SSH delete the folder named /install/ from the root of your board installation.
that way you will have a known working phpBB3.1.3 installation with everything as it should be and all of your existing members posts etc.

thanks HiFi dude. will this wipe out installed extensions? not a big deal if it does as long as i don't lose members and content. thanks to the great folks at phpBB, extensions are very easy to install. hat tip to them

****ok oh I see you excluded 'ext' from deletion so I guess that answers the extension question

Thats right. By keeping the ext folder and not altering their entries in the database they will not be altered

haven't done anything except download and delete the superfluous file and directories

trying to work my regular gig at the same time; probably not a good idea, but at least this is something I've done a few times ;-)

should be done in 10-15 min

thanks very much

If I'm keeping the store directory on the server, won't the store directory in the downloaded and unzipped package over-write the saved store directory?

I'll stand by for an answer before moving forward. thanks!!

It will only overwrite files of the same name.

No, just upload and let it write over files on the same name. It won't damage your installation.

I guess I'm wondering why I saved the store directory on the server, only to over-write it now. After last night I'm being cautious ;-)

The store directory contains (amongst other things) migrations files. Those files within the store directory are there for reference when needed and will not be changed, only the index.htmland .htaccessfiles will be overwritten by new the new ones.

These files have not been changed in the update package, but best to update them as you had a problem with the update before.
