Setting OAuth to login using Facebook

Post by hinckley » Sat Apr 11, 2015 8:45 pm

I want to be able to allow users to be able to link their Facebook and Twitter accounts to the forum to allow an easy and quick way of login on the forum.

I have 158 users that have created their account while the forum has been set using Db.
  • What happens if I select the OAuth option?
  • Will the 158 users be able to still login as normal?
  • Will the users who want to link their account to their Facebook/Twitter account be able to do that?
  • Will new users to the forum still have to create an account on the forum?
How do you set the forum to use OAuth? is it just a case off selecting OAuth in the pull-down and that is it!

Well, you could have a look at the information provided in the ACP:
Authentication wrote:Each OAuth provider requires a unique secret and key in order to authenticate with the external server. These should be supplied by the OAuth service when you register your website with them and should be entered exactly as provided to you.
Any service that does not have both a key and a secret entered here will not be available for use by the forum users. Also note, that user can still register and login using the DB authentication plug-in.
Also, see the Documentation.

For phpBB OAuth is used only as a login method not for registration.

I have read the documentation and the bits in the ACP but it doesn't make sense to me, this is why I have asked the questions above. Are you able to answer those questions?

Sorry, thought I already had.

No, you need to include the settings as described:

Depends what you mean by link? If you are talking about logging in using those accounts then yes, that is the whole point.

FACEBOOK: You will need to create an application on Facebook to obtain your token information. The App ID is your key and the App Secret is your secret.
Thanks for getting back, I am confused with this 'creating an application on Facebook', is something that has to be installed on phpbb?

It seems quite thorough though I've never tried it.

Thanks for the link Mick, I am not after an auto feed from phpbb forum to post on a Facebook Page but it good to know it can do that!

I am just after allowing the members to be able to access phpbb forum with their Facebook credentials so they don't have to remember their username and password.

No, 'creating an application on Facebook' means you have to create an app on FaceBook. As the Documentation states, when that is done you just need the token information from FaceBeook to add to the ACP.
