Upgrade from 3.1.5 to 3.1.6 has behaved awkwardly

So, this is what i did....

1. Uploaded phpBB-3.1.5_to_3.1.6.zip
2. Extracted it to the phpbb root.
3. Browsed http://www.example.com/forums/install and it returned a blank page. Went to acp, also blank.
After i went back to the board index, extensions have stopped working.

Then, i renamed the install/ dir to something else(installa) and refreshed the page.
Then i renamed it back as install, and it started working. But does anyone have a clue why it could have acted in this way? It shouldnt have produced this weidr behaviour

Hmm ...

Ironically, I just installed two brand new 3.1.5's in the last week, then today, this 3.1.16 comes along. Based on a couple of things I've read so far, I think I will stick with the 3.1.5, as I have already made a handful of style and raw coding changes so far!

I dont think there are any noticeable changes in design. There rarely is. It gets difficult and takes time to upgrade a style from previous versions. I recommend you upgrade to 3.1.16. Make a backup before you start, as you always should. Damn. i should really listen to that advice myself !

But, If you are decided not to upgrade to this version, then i suggest you update when 3.1.17 gets out.

if you uploaded the zip file to your server then that is likely what caused your problem.

it is suggested that even if your server says it can unzip files you should not do it that way.

unzip on your computer and upload the included files to the server using your ftp like normal.

No. I told him that if he thinks there is something wrong with 3.1.16, he should then skip it, but upgrade to 3.1.17. And not to stay on 3.1.5.

It has always worked to unzip them before, on all updates. The files were working.

thre is no 3.1.16 and if there ever is a 3.1.16 or a 3.1.17 it will likely be years down the road.

we have seen numerous problems with letting the server unzip the files. just because it worked before does not mean it will work this time or next time etc.

not saying that this is absolutelyl your problem but you can eleminate it as a culprit very easily by simply not doing it. until fairly recently this was never even an option.

oooh... snaap....... i meant 3.1.6 and 3.1.7. LOL. Yes, my bad david and lumpy.
It gets a little confusing as we confuse the 3.0 counting.

Ive been unzipping files since 2009, when i first started my forums. They didnt cause a problem, but i wont rely as much on them. Thanks.

I never heard of being able to upload a zipped file to the server and have the server unzip it for you until just a couple of years ago. are you sure you were able to do it on your host server as far back as 2009?

You could do this on a server way back lol, don't know of 'many' host that supported it but some did.

According to launchpad.net the unzip package was available as far back as 2006
