A backup every year is nu backup, that is nothing.
How do you backup the database with filezilla??
the only time you really need to backup the files is if you have changed something in them. if you have edited some of the files or if you have installed a new extension etc.
that is when you need to make a new file backup. If you have made no changes to the files since you installed the board, there is no reason for a backup of the files at all. even if you lose the whole board, you are only a few clicks away from a complete recovery as long as you have the database and internet access to be able to download a new set of files from here etc.
as for the database, how often you backup is up to you. it normally depends on how busy your board is and how paranoid you are about missing a few posts in your backup.
after all, backups are only for "just in case" something bad happens.
