Spam Comments Keep Coming!

Post by a1000w » Mon Jan 25, 2016 3:26 pm

Can't stop the spam comments (porn) from NL.... obviously a bot, various IP's... on my 3.1.6 board.
Have a fairly active board, just had a group install the new 3.1.6 version....and supposedly an anti-spam program as well. (I hope I wasn't duped!)
My visitors are older users and don't always know how to or want to sign up as "members", so everyone is treated as a Guest. No one registers. I have set up a number of items like "must be moderated before posting" and blocked a number of items like posting photos, etc.
My question is: Can someone provide any "secrets" about blocking spammers? Where in the Admin can I do a better job of stopping the spammers? Or can I? Obviously the laborious manual "banning" in the phpbb doesn't do anything at all... and I sometimes post the IP's on my htaccess, but that's really not the answer either. I have international posters... and have to be very careful what IP's I block. (I'm a webmaster, but not very clever with php programming.)
Is there really an anti-spam program for phpbb... or did I get duped by this group who just installed the 3.1.6 version? (If so, I will eat the cost, of course, and dutifully report them to you.)

If you are allowing your users to post as unregistered guests, how would you differentiate between your legitimate users and spammers?

In the phpbb setup, I've disallowed bots... and I have limited permissions to Guests, etc. Of course, the spam itself shows up in my modification list which I delete.
Not sure if I understand what you mean beyond that. Sorry.... looking for advice on how to do this properly. I don't want to lose the visitors... they are all military vets... and this board is important to them.

"Bots" in permissions are referring to Search engine spider bots, not spam bots.
There is no real way for you to differentiate between a spam bot and a legitimate guest user.
You could try using the Q&A captcha, but your users would have to answer that question every time they want to post.

I do use Captcha.
Is the ONLY way to stop the spam comments by registering posters?

yes, there is no way to know if a guest is a spammer or not until they post.

as for the captcha, if you are using the standard captcha that does not work and should have been removed from phpbb long ago.

if you stop allowing guests to post and require everyone to register you will solve this problem and it will be much easier on your members.

right now, if you allow guests to post and they have to solve the captcha for each post, that is a lot of work for your members.

if you setup the built in Q&A anti spam thing, they will have to solve it once when they register but then they will be able to post freely.

very very few places around the web allow guest posting because of the spam problem. your vets will have no problem with having to register and log in to post they are already doing it everywhere else online.

You may want to look at the Stop Forum Spam extension...

I would have to disagree about the stopforumspam thing. that has caused many problems because of false positives and just blanket banning IPs or domain name for no valid reasons.

just use the built in system properly and you will eleminate at least 99.9% of your spam without worrying about falsely banning someone etc.

I don't want to hijack this topic to discuss the merits of stopforumspam, but using it with 3.0.xx I did not find the the faults that Robert references.

Having said that, I am not using it right now and the sortables CAPTCHA is working great for me.

I would think the options are:
  1. Don't let guests post
  2. Require moderator approval for guest posts
  3. Have an extension that forces guest users to solve a CAPTCHA for each post
  4. Use some other mechanism to identify spammers like stopforumspam
A lot of this depends on how much of a problem it really is.

I do know people who have had a moratorium new members and/or guests posts during high spamming periods and then opened it up after a while. I don't think that has been very effective.

There is no need for an extension to force guest users to solve a captcha to post. That is already part of the standard phpBB.

I use a combination of three things and have not been spammed at all. The first is a script I use that is in my signature. It uses the stop forum spam database, but you have to update the database csv file about once a month. This is a more complicated approach, but extremely effective.

The second approach is that I moderate each first post. So if it's spam it never sees the light of day.

The third option I use is a great captcha-like extension called soratbles captcha. https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... s_captcha/

This more than likely won't be broken anytime soon. That right there will more than likely stop 90% of the spam unless it's a human spammer.

Good luck.

The OP is allowing the users to post as guests, so the "Moderate the first post" thing is meaningless, since the users do not register. The sortables captcha is not going to work either. If the users are too old or too bothered to register, they will certainly not want to do a sortable every time they post.

Then he needs to make the forum by registration only I guess or use the ZBblock script.

Try https://github.com/RMcGirr83/phpBB-3.1-stopforumspam
Extension will query the stop forum spam database on registration and posting (for guests only) and deny the post and or registration to go through if found.
