I use PHP 5.6 on my 3.1.8 forum
PHP 7 is NOT working on 3.1

And I think you should leave the other options standard.

I might have to enable 5.6. I'm running 5.4 with no issues. I take it 5.6 is more secure or something?

For the PHP thing you should try asking on a site that deals with PHP, server set up is beyond the scope of this forum. PHP 5.6.x is fine BTW.

Why does it have to be security? New releases come out for more than just that see PHP 5.6.0 Release Announcement.

I'm wondering the same, I know my host (GoDaddy) mentioned 5.5 was available and they could upgrade me. I sort of stuck with the "not broken don't fix" mentality for now.
