Updating the Database only?

right now, I have 3.1.8 in a temp folder. did the changes I wanted.

here is my plan and please let me know if this will work:
1. change theme to prosilver?
2. disable board?
3. copy the install folder to my temp board?
4. Change the config file to my old database?
5. run the conversion? (I assume this will be for the database)
6. check settings in admin panel?
if all is working OK, then change the folder name to the old board name?
(of course rename the old board folder first)

will this work OK? or am I missing something?
guess, I am thinking ahead and don't want to run into problems.

Thank you in advance for any advice,
Pat

if you have made any changes to the temp board in the admin panel etc. then you will lose those changes when you switch to your live board database.

what changes did you make on the temp board?

what version are you updating from?

robert,

don't think I did any changes in the admin panel. but, will check again to makes sure.

I made changes in arty's theme "elegance" only.
it is the theme I will use, but, will switch to prosilver when I do the conversation.
I would think it would not matter with the changes in "elagance". not sure?
here is the link to what I did:
http://sybisden.com/bbt/

I am using ver 3.0.12 and upgrading to 3.1.8

I think my plan will work, but, want to make sure.

Thank you for your reply. let me know what you think..

ok, changes to styles are not a problem.

that being the case, the method you proposed above should work just fine.

#5. it is not a conversion it is a upgrade. all you have to do once you have the 3.1.8 install folder uploaded is to access the install/database_update.php file in your browser.
do NOT go to the install/index.php file, just go directly to install/database_update.php

#6. not sure what settings you are referring to.

the rest are good steps.

Robert,

so glad you told me about the install. I thought there was a different install. the original didn't make sense to me, but, thought it might have a dual purpose...

on #6 (sorry, didn't explain the well).. my old board uses the folder "bb"
the new one is on "bbt" I will change the name on on the bb to something else.
then change the name on bbt to bb?
I think I did that in the past.

one last curious question, since I am only updating the database, it is necessary to set the old board to prosilver? what about in the new style? I don't think it is, since it is only the database being updated.

I can't thank you enough for your help. so so glad you told me about the install. you saved me from a lot of time, problems and confusion.

when you switch to the old database and you do not have the same old style installed, the board most likely will not work because it won't be able to find the style you have set in the database.
therefore, it is better to switch the board back to use prosilver and set override user to yes before doing the upgrade. that way, the new board will not be looking for a style that is not there.

remember that everything, every setting etc., is in the database. the files are only for the layout/looks of the board. the database is your board.

oh, and about the changing of the folder name. that is exactly how to do that. I was referring to your statement about changing settings in the admin panel. there should be no settings to change. as long as you change the folder names that is all you have to do.

Robert,
to make sure I understand, I will set prosilver on both (bbt and bb) prior to the upgrade.

one thing I am not real sure of. if I set the config file from the old board to the new board prior to the update,
will this cause any problems? I don't see any other way to do this since the config file holds the php database and needs updated?

you are saving me a lot of time with your help. you are wonderful. can't thank you enough.

Robert,

Oh heck, I just remembered about the control panel. yes, I did make changes.
I have a couple scripts in the custom folder:
Image1.jpg
should I disable them? or won't it matter since it is in the "elegance" theme?

geez, I hate to delete them, I went thru hell figuring it all out.

yes you will lose those extensions when you switch to the old database on the live board.

you will simply have to re enable them from the admin panel once you have it all working.

you are making this all much more difficult than it needs to be.

since you can't transfer any of your extensions etc. to the old database on the server, you should consider just following the standard upgrade procedure and then add your custom style after you get the board working with your upgraded database.

Upgrading from phpbb 3.0.x to phpbb 3.1.x
  • Your server must be running at least PHP 5.3.3
  • Most MODs for 3.0.x are incompatible with 3.1.x and their functionality will be removed in the update process.
  • Styles for 3.0.x cannot be installed or used on 3.1.x.
  1. Backup up your board's files and database
  2. Download the Support Toolkit. Install it and run the database cleaner to remove all old MODs from the database.
  3. Deactivate all styles except for prosilver
  4. Ensure that the activated spambot countermeasure is one of the standard phpBB plugins (Simple image, GD image, GD 3D image, Q&A, reCaptacha).
  5. Set British English as the only language pack
  6. Delete all of your phpBB 3.0.x files EXCEPT for the following:
    • The config.php file
    • The /images/ directory
    • The /files/ directory
    • The /store/ directory
  7. Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from the uncompressed 3.1.x Full Package (EXCEPT for config.php) into your forum's directory (Note: you don't want to overwrite your original config.php file)
  8. Browse to yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/database_update.php and keep clicking the continue button until it says it is finished. This will take a long time on a large board, maybe hours. Dont give up.
  9. Delete the folder named /install/
  10. Hold one foot in the air and spin around in a circle three times saying "I am a phpbb guru".
now, upload your style that you have been working on at the local level and install it on your new 3.1.8 board.
then, go in and upload and enable whatever extensions you want on your new board.

done.

you are making this all much more difficult than it needs to be.
 I usually do that with everything. seems it's the easy stuff I have more problems with..

The script is on the 3.1.8 ver. nothing on the old one.
can I just disable them, or completely delete it all from the server?

I assume you mean for me to do another complete copy of php3?
afterwards, then copy my theme and ext?
what is throwing me off , "yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/database_update.php "
I was hoping to use what I have on the temp folder. (would be quicker, well, maybe)
this way, I would still have my old one just in case. I have a backup of it, so guess that would work just in case.
oh heck, I am confusing myself.

I am sorry for so many questions. I was hoping for something different where my transfer would go smooth with no issues.
Hold one foot in the air and spin around in a circle three times saying "I am a phpbb guru".
 I wish

Robert,

OK, I will do what you said and follow direction to the "T"
have to wait till later today, didn't want to bog down the server during the day.

Thank again for your help. I appreciate it very very much.
