Can I stop SPAMMERS trying to register.

Post by larneman » Sun Apr 24, 2016 1:49 am

Using phpBB 3.1.9

In a little under a week since updating to 3.1.9 I have had SPAMMERS trying to register.

They are now being caught by this " CAPTCHA error
» Questions for the captcha could not be retrieved. Please contact a board administrator"

Is there an option or a method to block them.

They have filled 5 pages of the "Error log".

abuseipdb.com tells me they are from Russia and other former eastern block countries.

Second question how do I clear the "Error Log" as it is now fifty pages.

I have checked the register page and can register a test user.

Suggest you install the Sortables CAPTCHA extension. Have not tried it with 3.1.9 yet, but have not seen any complaints about it either.

This CAPTCHA has been nearly 100% effective for me.

With the Q&A CAPTCHA, one has to be careful with the questions. If they are too easy or searchable, bots have been able to solve them.

Good luck.

However, the answer to whether you can stop spammers from TRYING to register is "No".

CAPTCHA error with the Q&A CAPTCHA

Post by MedCo » Sun May 01, 2016 2:00 pm

Hello,

there is a solution for the error (Q&A Captcha)? Too bad that fixing errors takes so long.
No one has an idea?

Thank you very much

Not sure from which version the OP updated from but the ticket says that he wasn't able to reproduce the error when updating from 3.1.8.

The issue here is not in any way affecting your abilities to stop spambots. The only bug here is that it unnecessarily fills up the error logs with CAPTCHA error messages. :)

Have a look at this topic for some effective solutions for preventing spam.

stopping the bots is as simple as figuring out a good question for the Q&A anti spam and using that.

you don't need any 3rd party setups at all.
a good question that the answer can not be found using google and is not a multiple choice or "what color" type question will stop pretty much 100% of the bots. for any humans spammers you can find them quickly using the first one or two posts needing approval.

as far as the spam bots trying to register, that does not hurt you in any meaningful way so just don't worry about it.

keep them from registering in the first place and you will not have any bad spam problems.
