IP adress viewing Permissions

Post by Dragonwolf » Sun May 08, 2016 9:07 am

Hi, is there a way to prevent moderators from being able to see IP addresses in the MCU? I'm trying to set up a gang of low-level moderators whose job is basically just to delete spam topics. I found this mod for 3.0 that does what I want and I'm wondering if the feature had been added to 3.1?

I am not sure what benefit seeing an IP address will have on detecting a "spam" topic.

It is either spam or not - and you can tell that by just looking at it.

Ah, I might not have explained it properly. I'd like to stop low level moderators from viewing IP addresses because they just don't have that level of trust. There's going to be a whole lot of them and all they're going to be doing is flagging posters, soft-deleting topics, basic editing maybe, and a couple of other basic things.

Still not convinced. An IP address on its own is pretty useless information. It is about as useful as saying you live in London or Chicago.

Most users will change their IP address whenever they reboot their router.

it is highly unlikely that anyone can find out anything about anyone by knowing their IP addreses at any given time.
usually the only things you can find out are the name of the ISP and maybe the name of the city/town where they are located.

here is the current information of my static IP address:
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/104.60.149.147
the city is close but at least 30 miles away from where I live.

people should really stop believing all the crap they tell you on tv about how they can find you using a IP address.

I think Dragonwolf has a point in that knowing a person's IP address gives a person the ability to do port scans. If the owner of the IP is careless enough not to have a firewall and a patched system it could be quite easy to gain unauthorised access.

Things that could be accessed without permission include FTP, screen sharing, SSH etc.

But if they were so inclined they could do that for any IP address.
