I cannot install my board

Post by DogBiteNL » Thu Sep 29, 2016 1:50 pm

Support Request Template
What version of phpBB are you using? phpBB 3.1.9
What is your board's URL? http://ripdesigns.net
Who do you host your board with? Bluehost
How did you install your board? I used the download package from phpBB.com/also tried one click install provided by my host
What is the most recent action performed on your board? Fresh Install
Is registration required to reproduce this issue? No(dont think so?)
Do you have any MODs installed? No
Do you have any extensions installed? No
What styles do you currently have installed? -
What language(s) is your board currently using? english
Which database type/version are you using? I Don't Know
What is your level of experience? New to PHP and phpBB
What actions did you take (updating your board; installing a MOD, style or extension; etc.) prior to this problem becoming noticeable? I tried installing with the One click install, i tried manually and i tried fileziilla.
Please describe your problem. I made a database but cant seem to move to the next step of the install. My personal guess is that i do something with uploading the downloaded phpbb files to the right place before i can go to next step which is the ........./install/index.php install.

I tried every ...../install/index.php combination that i could come up with and only get errors like "404 Error File Not Found
The page you are looking for might have been removed,
had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.".
This makes me think that the phpbb files are in the wrong place.

Before i tried to install it manually with and without filezilla i contacted bluehost support. The person who helped me tried to manually install twice but couldnt get it to work.

I tried it myself without prior experience, a more tech savvy person from my host tried it and we both failed. I am in way over my head at this point.
I need pro support to get my board up and running. Please let me know which details i need to provide to get the support i need.

Best regards,
Rico

It all depends where you've uploaded it to.

Can you post a screenshot showing your filezilla window and the paths to where the phpBB files are?

http://ripdesigns.net goes to a bluehost page because they apparently own the domain name and there is no site there.

http://ripdesigns.com goes to a godaddy site for the same reason.

maybe your problem is because your domain name is not working.

What DNS are you using for your website?

I hope this helps. I downloaded a FTP config file from the ftp manager in my cpanel and uploaded on filezila so i assume that would put all the correct details on the right places for the install.
http://ripdesigns.net goes to a bluehost page because they apparently own the domain name and there is no site there.
How can that be? i paid 65 euros for the host/domain for a year and wouldnt the bluehost support person notice this if this was the problem?

I dont know, how do i check?

In the first screenshot, at the very bottom of the list on the left is a folder called public_html

The phpBB folder has to be in there.
That's the 'if it's in here it's online' folder.

That's why you can't see it.

Then once the folder is in there, if you go to yourdomain.com/phpBB (or whatever you call the directory) the install page will show up.

It looks like the phpBB files and folders are all dumped into the top-level folder, not into an individual phpBB3 folder by themselves.

I have had contact with my host again and requested a reset of the file manager in the cpanel. It is no longer a big pile of bad install attempts(see screenshot below). So i am basically back at square one.
I was told to follow this guide.http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/ ... al-install

I completed the "database setup" and i am now at "Upload phpBB To Your Host" step 3. This is were i took a wrong turn last time. Could anyone help me guide me through the correct install process from this point.

Thanks for the support so far everyone, much appreciated.

Click the public_html folder on the left. That's where you need to put the phpBB folder. If it's in there, it's online.

Unfortunately still no luck.
I clicked on public_html then clicked on upload. Uploaded the phpbb winrar, extracted the files and moved the files from the phpbb to public_html as described on http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/ ... al-install.
(also tried it with all the files still inside the phpbb3 folder)

http://ripdesigns.net/install(/index.php) result in a black page.
......../home2/ripdesig/public_html/install/index.php and ......../public_html/install/index.php both result in:
Not Found

The requested URL /public_html/install] was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The link does work but you have a white page.

That's because
http://ripdesigns.net/install/phpinfo.php
PHP Version 5.2.17

The minimum php version for the server must be 5.3.3 and less than 7.0

You need to ask the hosts to upgrade php.

Also, you should never upload a zip file and decompress on the server side as they do not always keep the correct folder hierarchy intact. Always do it on your computer and upload the folder you extract.

And, the other addresses you tried will not work because public_html is not part of the actual address, it's the directory name on the server that is public.

Ok thanks for helping uncovering the source of my problems. I will contact my host again.

Will Filezilla keep correct folder hierarchy intact?
Are the following steps the correct steps to upload phpbb through filezilla?
-Unpack the phpbb winrar on my pc
-Connect to server and find the phpbb3 map in the local site section
- move the phpbb3 map from local site section to public_html in the remote site section
- wait for transfer completion then do the ............install/index.php install part

Yes filezilla will upload the whole folder as is.
Those steps are correct. You can actually just go to yoursite.com/foldername and it will automatically take you to the install page.

My host updated php to version 5.4. I followed the exact steps from my previous post but getting a 404 not found error:
404 Error File Not Found
The page you are looking for might have been removed,
had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Do i have the go in the phpbb3 folder, select all files and move them to public_html or will this compromise the folder hierarchy?
