If you like to copy&paste something I know then feel free.
If you like to waste your time though. I am not confused, seems like you are tough. 8-)

Seriously.. an user like you registered since 2007 need to be lead hand-in-hand to successfully achieve a simple update.. that's confusing me more than anything else.

There is nothing so simple as updating 3.1.x to 3.1.x, everybody knows.
In case, use the search this forum facility.

Exactly somehow I went down to 3.1.9... why?
Install instructions would make sense and take me there.

2.Upload all the files contained in this archive
following instructions uploaded: install, vendor and phpBB-3.1.9_to_3.1.10.zip

Went to /install... read above

It sounds as if you have downloaded the "Changed files" version of the update.

When you have unzipped the download as you found there are a number of other .zip files in there. Unzip the one that you want to upgrade from/to (in this case phpBB-3.1.9_to_3.1.10.zip) and then upload those files along with the vendor and install folders from the main unzipped file.

If you follow this exactly you should be able to update successfully:
  1. Backup all board files and the database.
  2. Download the latest version.
  3. Unzip to your desktop and open the phpBB3 folder.
  4. Remove (delete) the config.php file, and the /images folder from the package.
  5. Via FTP or SFTP upload the remaining files and folders to the root of your board installation on the server overwriting the existing files.
  6. In your browser go to http://www.example.com/yourforum/instal ... update.php
  7. Continue that until it completes.
  8. Via FTP or SFTP delete the /install folder from the root of your board installation.
  9. Done.
You now have an up to date board containing all your users, posts, and extensions.

Only use a good FTP or SFTP client, such as WinSCP or FileZilla to transfer
the files. (File transfer utilities provided in host control panels can cause problems.)

Keep in mind that everybody is trying to help you here. You'd be surprised to see how many people make that mistake of not properly unzipping/uploading. So please stay respectful towards everyone here.

well, if you truly followed those instructions above exactly and in order, then you should not be getting a blank page.
however, a blank page usually means a php error and you will find those errors in your hosting error logs.

what php version are you running on the server?

upload the folder named installed again and access yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/phpinfo.php in your browser.

at the very top it will tell you the php version you are runing on.

This indicates that you are trying to do a conversion instead of an update.
You didn't follow the procedure posted by Mick step by step - if at all ...

So yes, you can do the same mistake multible times.
