Please help!! Website forum update and domain change

I have been appointed admin of a metal detecting club website. They were basically going to lose their website as none of them know what they are doing. Not that I do it seems! Anyway, I'm the mug who offered to do it and now i'm out of my depth. I've made a nice new website on 000webhost, new domain. But the forum is attached to the old site. For the time being I'd linked the forum onto the new website from the old, but now I want to move it over completely to the new domain. I thought it was going to be as easy as going into the forum admin change the cookie thing, and the domain, and it would be done, but obviously this isn't the case. I've downloaded the back up of the forum on to my computer? Don't know if that's right? Then I went on to 000website and made a new database and tried to upload it but it just said file is to large. To be honest I have not go a clue what to do, all the explanations look so complicated, and I'm wasting hours of my life trying to do it. Also I want to update the forum, it is the 3.0.12 version, I imagine it hasn't been done for years. When I go to choose the automatic upload I don't see the current version on the list. Thing is I am worried about losing it all, which would make me a very unpopular admin-website-person in the club. They want it updating but keep everything the same, if that makes sense? Didn't think it was going to be this complicated! Wish i'd never volunteered to do it now! ;)

doing what you wish is not particulary complicated but there are a lot of steps involved.
how about links to the old site and the new one please so we can see what you have to work with.

you will need to know how to use ftp to upload/download files.

for the error about file too large, that is common and there is a simple way around it. however, it also requires you to be able to use ftp to upload a program that will overcome this issue.
you will have to be able to open that program's file and edit it will certain bits that you would get from your phpbb's config.php file.

I know, I know, it sounds like even more complicated but it really isn't. as long as you can read and follow instructions it will all work in the end.

once we know what you have and exactly where you are in the process of moving the board, we can give you more detailed information.

Hi Vicky,
let's get the important things out of the way first.

1. you must have a complete backup of the database. the files are not particulary important but the database is.

You can get that from the board's admin panel.

once there, click on the Maintenance tab.

once there, in the left menu , click on Backup
once there, check full, gzip and download
then click on the "select all" link below the box.

then click submit and choose a place on your computer where you can find it.

If you already did this make sure you did it exactly as I said or you will not have a complete backup.

now, you are protected no matter what happens.

The basic recipe is Knowledge Base - Transferring Your Board to a New Host or Domain.

phpBB 3.0.x has reached EOL, so that's a good idea. Once you get the board transferred to the new domain and operating correctly, then you can tackle upgrading. I wouldn't try to upgrade until you've become a bit more familiar with running the board, particularly know what MODs and styles might be in use on the existing board.

Ok,I think it is going to be best to install a new 3.1.10 board on the new server first.
1. create a working folder on your computer, name it "working" or whatever.

2. click here and save to that working folder:
https://www.phpbb.com/files/release/phpBB-3.1.10.zip

3. unzip the package to that working folder.

4. using ftp, upload the folder named phpBB3 to your new domain server.

5. in your browser, go to: http://threespiressearchsociety.com/phpBB3 and run the install.

6. using ftp, delete the folder named "install"

you are done, you now have a brand new phpbb 3.1.10 board at
http://threespiressearchsociety.com/phpBB3

once you have that done we can move on to the database problems.

What is ftp? File transfer protocol? Just uploading it to the database?

Downloaded to working file on my desktop, extracted the files, now have a folder phpbb3 and when I go onto my database to import on phpmyadmin, through 000webhost when I click on 'choose file' and it takes me to the working file but when I click on the phpbb3 folder it just opens it and shows me the contents. I wont let me choose the folder as a whole?

no, this has nothing to do with the database.

ftp is for transferring files from your computer to the server etc.
How to use ftp
there are two parts to the board. the files and the database. they are not in the same place on your hosting account.
the database is usually accessed using phpmyadmin from your hosting control panel.
the files have to be managed using a ftp program.

you should have uploaded the complete folder named phpBB3

exactly where did you upload it to on the server?

what is the url to your website that you are trying to install phpbb on?
