You could upgrade to another more powerfull product from your host or change host. Even go from shared hosting to a vps.
there are 2 layers - shared hosting server, or vps server - you have your own vitrual server then separately
there is also shared database
or vps database
in my case I found the shared database was hopeless, I went to the vps database pretty fast but then found that page execution was slow at time of very heavy traffic
I complained to the hosts who pointed out that my site's traffic was huge, it was just a time that coincided with certain sensational incidents in the news, that caused my site to suddenly increase traffic many times over, the hosts pointed out that my site was trying to hog resources at the cost of other sites in the shared server, automatic processes stop your site from hogging resources, effectively your site is denied the server for x seconds OR you pay the $ for VPS - dedicated server. thankfully the huge traffic passed after a few days, back to normal
