Negative notifications

One of my members has a Notification that is negative! it is showing as -1

This is showing on the notification and the private message

When he clicks it its taking him to his messages but he has no messages to read and it still shows the -1

I have tapatalk installed and he always uses the forum with tapatalk so I don't know how long its been like it for him as he has only just logged in to the forum on a laptop for the first time in a year! disabling tapatalk makes no difference

Anyone know of a solution to this?

Search turned up viewtopic.php?f=466&t=2392446 which points to https://tracker.phpbb.com/browse/PHPBB3-14361, indicating this is a known problem.

Not a problem. Search seems so simple in concept but finding the right search terms can sometimes be challenging. For some reason I remembered there being previous reports of this problem.

Yeah I knew there was a report of this but finding it and the solution was proving difficult!
