Registration - Is double entry of an email address possible?

We are running 3.1.10

On the registration form potential forum users are requested to enter their email address. They are not requested to enter it again to confirm that it is correct. I understand that the double entry system did at one time feature in phpBB but for some reason was dropped.

Is there any way that we can install a double entry email request when someone registers?

Why do I ask? I've had someone telling me that he never received confirmation that his account had been activated. In checking his details I then spotted that he had entered his email address in this style:

johnsmith!@abc.com and not johnsmith1@abc.com as it should have been.

Many users, at least I do, simply copy and paste what they already entered. Not sure how one can combat a user from not entering in their correct email address. PEBKAC is very difficult to completely remove.

By chance today elsewhere on the forum virtually the same question has been asked.

I agree that the problem is not solved if someone uses a copy and paste. However something at the back of my mind tells me that when I have come across the double entry of data on some websites it will not allow me to paste into the second box. I have to re-enter the information. I can remember no more than that. Am I dreaming?

One possible solution is to get them to enter their email address just once but under the wording 'email' an extra line is displayed:

email:
PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK NOW THAT THIS IS CORRECT

Whatever we do it will never completely stop the problem but if we can at least minimize it then it will be a step in the right direction.
