How best to archive images while retaining posts?

Post by petereeles » Sun Nov 26, 2017 9:50 pm

The board that I run has really useful information in the posts and so I want to retain them, but my hosting provider has a limit of 300,000 files that I will hit very soon and this is due to the file attachments associated with these posts. How would you handle this situation? I was thinking of retaining the posts, but removing the images (archived off, available on request; the posts are still searchable but the images will be missing).

Two questions:

1. If I retain the post but zap the image files, is there any way to render an alternative image (on an image rendering error, for example) that explains why the image is no longer available and what to do? I'm just not sure how I replace the original image with such an entry.

2. Is there a better way to "archive"?

I hope this makes sense - and please let me know if not! All advice appreciated.
