2 forums 1 database

Post by testingground » Tue Feb 06, 2018 4:44 pm

Is it possible to have 2 forums that can access the same database?

Let me try to explain.
I have an app for my users that includes a webviewer in the app to view the forum

I have a forum design that works well on desktop, but I want a VERY simple design for use on a mobile app
I know 3.1 is responsive, but this just shrinks stuff and still includes most features on the mobile app. I just want a stripped down style just for mobile app user, but when they visit the desktop version or not through the app (ie mobile browser) they get the full monty.

Ive tried the response hide code but Id have to hide a lot to get a stripped down forum

So I was wondering if I installed a second phpbb on www.mycurrentforum.com/mobileforum then I could link my app webviewer to that forum link for the stripped down version style.
Would this work? can you have 2 forums accessing the same database at the same time, making and reading posts etc.

Hope Ive explained it well enough!

all you need to do is install a different style that does what you want.

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... n/demo/3.1
checkout proflat style, basic style, etc.

or, check out the one in my sig file.

these all look good in whatever device you use.

How would I tell my current install to use that style when on my mobile app?
I want to keep my current style for desktop and non mobile app users on mobile devices

I was trying to offer you an alternative to keeping your current style. there doesn't seem to be a good way to do what you asked.

If you have a special app for mobile then you can change style id (to whatever mobile style you have) and use it.

There is a method in user class setup you can use that method to change style id. Depends on what that app file has you can do it with $user->setup('language_file', 'style_id') or by using an event to change style id or what is said below.

Let's say your board is at mydomain.com/phpBB. Let's say the style_id of your mobile style is 6 and your default style_id is 2. Put a link in your overall_footer.html for your default style. The link would be:

Code: Select all

<a href= "mydomain.com/phpBB/index.php?style=6">Go to mobile style</a>
Then put a link in the overall_footer.html of the mobile style:

Code: Select all

<a href= "mydomain.com/phpBB/index.php?style=2">Go to Non-mobile style</a>

database > <prefix>_styles > style_id (or certainly something recognisable)

I found it by previewing the style in the php admin panel, it lists the style no. in the url.

Looks like this will work.
Thanks for the help
