How to set up method of communication between moderators

Post by UptheClarets »

This might be simple but there again it might not be possible.

On our forum we are building up a small group of moderators to keep things in order and I'd like to set up something so the moderators can communicate with each other. We don't have private messaging active so can't use that. Is it possible to set up an extra forum that only moderators can see.

Would appreciate any help.
Thanks, Tony.

Yep.

Make a new forum.

Permissions
group forum permissions
Moderators group
select the forum
standard access

then
Group forum permissions
registered users
choose that same forum
No Access

Also do the same for the guests and bots groups.

Anyone in the mod group can get to the forum. Everyone else can't.

By the way you can also set up permissions so only the 'team' can PM.

Thanks KevC - that seems to work for me. I'm a novice so could you give me some instructions re: private messaging please?

Yep

permissions
group permissions
registered users
private message tab
Can send private messages NO

Same again for the mods group
Can send private messages YES

The mods can PM but the users can't.
Much better to use the forum as explained though. I have those forums on all my sites and we have one here too. It's a useful and easy place for your team to discuss things out of sight. Easier than PMs.

That doesn't work for me on private messaging. Done as follows but nothing changed.

That's a start, I hadn't switched it on.

For a general user there is no reference to Private Messages but for the moderators there now is. However, when I go in and click on Compose message, I get a message which reads: "You are not authorised to send private messages."

You did choose NO rather than NEVER for the registered users group didn't you?

Thanks ever so much - it was never rather than no. Seems to be working now.

First time I've used this forum and the response and help has been brilliant.

Just to explain why that makes a difference, with permissions the order is NEVER, YES, NO.

You can be in multiple groups but if one is set on NEVER then you can't do that action, no matter what the other groups say.

If it's on NO for one and YES for others, then you can do that action.

So for instance, everyone is a registered user. They are set to NO for the ability to PM, but your mods group is set to YES so the people in the mods group can PM but everyone else can't. When you had it set to NEVER, the mods were also in that group and so the NEVER permission stopped them, regardless of the other group setting.

That explains it. I’m still trying to get used to things but I understand that now.

May I suggest that a better means of communication would be a private forum that only Moderators could see? No need to copy everyone with a PM or send a PM to a whole group, and reading the PMs will get awkward after several replies.

In that case, if you are using phpBB 3.1.x, as would be indicated by your posting in this 3.1.x Support forum, you should consider upgrading to the latest 3.2.2 version. 3.1.x has reached end-of-life as of January 1, 2018, so no security fixes or bug patches will be done in the future, and on July 1, 2018, all support for it will end and this forum will become Read-only.
