no I never touched anything...I suspect that your previous versions have that enabled and you upgraded.....

If I run this UPDATE phpbb_users SET user_notify = 1 WHERE user_type <> 2;
and this UPDATE phpbb_users SET user_notify_type = 1 WHERE user_type <> 2;
will it fix the problem?

What is the setting in your UCP for this board (phpbb.com/community), Board preferences, Edit posting defaults, Notify me upon replies by default:?
