A totally different take on phpBB for 2016

Post by floppydiskette » Fri Jul 01, 2016 6:35 pm

Hey everyone -

I spent a bit of time modifying the default, prosilver theme to something absolutely, completely different. It resembles sites like Flarum and Discourse a bit more, without being awful.

Check it out! (DevDiscuss.com)

I just made it, so there aren't really any members or anything yet. However, I showed it to a few people and they really liked it, so I put the code up on GitHub.

What do you think?

I've moved this from 3.0.x Styles Support to here since this seems like it's meant for 3.1.x. I assume you are wishing to release this on phpBB.com. Nice style by the way.

I have to say I like it very much as well. :)

Maybe you could take this to Area51, our development site, and gather some comments from people in development as well. The people there have also recently been discussing a potential new default style for phpBB in the future and we appreciate all the community input and help that we can get.

I agree, nicely done. It is simple without being too simple. It is completely different but still based on prosilver without looking like a warmed over prosilver.

very good work. I could see this being a new default phpbb style.

Overall, nicely done. I miss features like "Active Topics" etc but great start. Very clean looking. The main/core phpBB badly needs a design (usability) update. It gets the job done but needs some help in the mobile dept (the default phpBB theme).

Thank you, everyone! Since the forum is so empty, it doesn't look like it might if it were full, but I think it has a clean, minimalist, modern feel. I did take away a lot of options that I just considered unnecessary, but other people might want to keep. I'll post it over in Area51 as well!

It looks modern, elegant and simple. The blocks remind me a bit of Windows 10.
If there was a dark version I would download and use it on my other forum. But of course the colours are not very hard to change individually.

yes
however, why would you want to? you should update to 3.1.9

you are missing a lot of events and other fixes being 3 versions out of date.

this style consists of only the theme folder so even if new versions of phpbb come out with new events, it won't stop this style from working.

I would suggest that instead of following the install instructions that come with it (that tell you to replace your prosilver/theme/ folder with the new fledge one.), that you work with a copy of prosilver that you rename.
that way, you won't overwrite the theme folder when you update your board to the next 3.1 update.

this may even work with 3.2 as is but I haven't tried it yet.
