3.1 Custom Header and Footer?

Post by JupiterGPL » Mon Jul 21, 2014 4:57 pm

Currently under phpbb 3.0.12 my website has a custom header that overrides some of the code in the overall_header template with my own image and menu. I also have a custom footer that goes underneath the phpbb footer.
You can see it here: http://www.gopherpucklive.com/forum/index.php

If I understand this correctly... In 3.1, I should not be editing the phpbb files. If this is true, how am I supposed to get my custom header or footer implemented once 3.1 comes out? I would like to start implementing the changes on a test site with the beta version of 3.1 that is currently out, but I want to make sure I do it correctly.

If you are creating your own custom style you would certainly be editing the style template files.

I have always stuck with the main phpbb style. In this case, ProSilver.

I was under the impression that we should avoid editing the files. Maybe that only goes for the .php files when it comes to MODs? (Now Extensions) But editing the style template files is still okay?

If you are customizing your style, you would be editing style template files.

Thanks!

I knew there were so many changes coming with 3.1 and I did not want to mess anything up.

Now that I am slowly figuring things out...

On my website I currently use one template file for the header and menu navigation. I use <!-- INCLUDE filename.html —> to get that file in both my main site and in the overall_header for phpBB3.0.12.

Now as I am learning and testing on phpBB3.1 beta (Not a live site) I am attempting to do the same. But when I try to use <!-- INCLUDE myfile.html —> in the overall_header template file I cannot get it to work. I can see that <!-- INCLUDE navbar_header.html —> is being used in the overall_header to get the nav data. Why can I not do the same to have it bring in my file? Does this function not work in 3.1 or am I doing it wrong?

I am am VERY new to 3.1 and am trying to learn some of the basics on how things will work with it.

It should work just fine. Can you describe what exactly happens? Are you getting errors?

If it should work fine I must be messing it up somehow. I will take a closer look when I get the chance.

That is assuming your "myfile.html" is in the template folder with the rest of the style's templates.

It was in this case.... but does it HAVE to be in there?
In 3.0.12 I am doing something similar but the file is not in the template folder. So it says something like ../../../myfile.html in that case.

Best not do that. Either put the template file in the template folder, or make an extension that uses the template events currently present.
