Ads before or after the first post in a topic

Post by Agent_K64 »

Hi all,

Back on 3.0, I added advertisements to my forum with the help of this excellent article: https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... in-phpbb3/

Just wondering if there are any issues or special considerations when doing this on 3.1?

Thanks!

I think I saw where someone is working on an extension for the advertisements MOD.

however, if the code is the same in 3.1 prosilver then it should still work .

With the responsive design in 3.1, I ended up dropping my Google Adsense ads (small revenue and messes up the look on smartphones and tablets)
Using 3.3, PHP version 7.4, MySQL 5.6, Host: HawkHost shared Linux, Style: Prosilver

Nope, You should get new responsive ads codes from your adsense account.
Then, there will be no mess.

Is there such a thing?

I use Adsense for 7 years and this is the first time I hear about it.
Where in the menu Adsense I could find such codes?

(Sorry for my excellent english.)

Thank you, Lumpy.

I googlit right now.
For instance, if a visitor is reading your web page on desktop, you can choose to serve the large 728×90 (leaderboard) unit but if another visitor is viewing the same web page on a mobile phone, you can display the smaller 468×60 ad unit.

The AdSense code detects the size of the visitor’s screen and serves the appropriate ad unit that will best fit the available space.

that is fine, however, you need to go log into your adsense account to get the new responsive code. then you replace the code you are using on your board with the new code .

Just edit viewtopic_body.html and you can have the functionality today. That's what I did. No need for an extension although an extension would help more people, especially if you're not comfortable editing code.

yes you can edit the code if you want, however, each time you update phpbb in the future you will have to redo the edits. I would imagine that future updates will be complete file replacements since with extensions there is no need for editing the core files.

My understanding is using the automatic update package can handle changes, provided you choose to merge changes on a file-by-file basis.

that was for phpbb 3.0 I don't think there is an autoupdate package for 3.1 currently.
that is the main point of 3.1 extensions. there will be no need for editing the core files any longer.
therefore there will be no need for a update method that needs to merge any changes to the core files with the new ones.

Oh that sucks. I have tweaked 3-4 core files in 3.1.x because it's simpler than finding / creating / waiting for an extension. Plus more waiting after core phpBB is updated and the dev disappears and doesn't update their extensions.

I've been using phpBB long enough now (14 years) to know don't just rely on any extensions, pick only a few and only the best. Over time most will not be updated even though the core files are.

As a result of your news, I'm definitely going to document my few changes very well for upgrade time ;-)

Long term it would be nice to have a more streamlined upgrade process for phpBB, one where you don't even have to upload/download files (similar to WordPress, where it downloads the file directly to your webserver during the process).
