Trying to Convert 3.0.12 to 3.1 "Could not find path to your former board"

I'm getting this error "Could not find path to your former board" and I'm not sure why, the settings seem to be correct.

You don't need to know that to go from 3.0 to 3.1

I am having that problem too.

I had a bitch of time getting an old version upgraded to 3.1.0-a3, but cant seem to upgrade to the latest 3.1.1. The instructions to upgrade are great and simple, but only if the version names matches the upgrade offerings - so I upgrade from "3.1.0-a3 to 3.1.0RC6" in hope to upgrade from that, to 3.1.1 but alas, I am chasing my tail it seems.

If anyone can provide meaningful insight, i'm all ears.

It only asks for a path to your former board if you are converting phpBB2 to phpBB3.
The instructions for converting from 3.0.x to 3.1.x are here in the FAQ topic:

Yes I realize that - why my frustration. I was with the Host today and they could not see an issue, and we tried many variants of the path, but no luck. The problem is that I cant get beyond that screen, which is why I keep getting the message in the administration panel that my version is outdated.

You do not need to know the path. The conversion from 3.0 to 3.1 does not go through that option.

If you follow the instructions posted above, you replace some files, you run the database_update.php file and that's it.

Hello Kev,

Been playing with my board http://www.dieselduck.info/forum/ and I have read and reread the info you provided. I am currently up and running, however I seem to have several issues, including problems with new registration not being possible, which I suspect have all to do with my database, which I can't seem to update.

When I use the .../install/database_update function, I get a red screen with the following text, and no further options are available.
Updating database to latest stable release

I recently upgraded from 3.0.8 to 3.1.0, and was trying to upgrade to 3.1.1. Not sure if all these errors are related, or what I should do to get these resolves, any input is well appreciated.

acp thanks is a left over from the thanks MOD for 3.0 no MODs work with 3.1.

you need to delete that module from the admin panel as well as any other modules left over from old MODs.

I think you have some people who entered incorrect responses to the custom profile fields so it's not getting the result it's expecting. Try using 3.1.2 as that has a new migrator.php file.

what you really should be doing is not a conversion but a complete file replacement method.

I suggest you start over completely if possible:
Upgrading from phpbb 3.0.x to phpbb 3.1.1

Tools needed to set up and customise phpBB

Preparation
  1. Backup all board files and the database.
  2. Download the full package.
  3. Unzip to your desktop and open the phpBB3 directory.
  4. Remove (delete) the config.php file, and the /images and /files directories from the package.
  5. In Administration Control Panel (ACP) > GENERAL > Board Configuration > Board settings:
    Default style: prosilver
    Overide user style: Yes
  6. If spambot countermeasures are enabled:
Go to > Administration Control Panel (ACP) > GENERAL > Board Configuration > Spambot countermeasures:
If the installed plugin used is not GD image, GD 3D image, Simple image, Q&A, or reCaptcha, then change it to one of those.

Removing the 3.0.x MODs from your database.
(None of the 3.0.x MODs will work in 3.1.1. It will use extensions and they will have to be installed. )
  1. Download and uncompress the Support Toolkit
  2. Upload the stk directory from Support Toolkit package to the root of your board installation.
  3. In your browser go to http://www.example.com/yourforum/stk, login if necessary.
  4. Using the menus navigate to ADMIN TOOLS > Database Cleaner and run that tool.
File replacement
  1. Via FTP or SSH delete everything from your board installation on the server EXCEPT for the config.php file, and the /files, /images, and /store directories.
  2. You can also, optionally, delete the /store/mods directory, if it exists (it contains the MOD packages installed using AutoMOD).
  3. Via FTP or SSH upload the remaining files and directories (from step 3 under the Preparation heading above) to the root of your board installation on the server overwriting the existing files.
  4. In your browser go to http://www.example.com/yourforum/instal ... update.php
  5. Let that run to completion.
  6. Via FTP or SSH delete the folder named /install/ from the root of your board installation.
You now have a brand new phpbb 3.1.1 board with all your members and posts etc.

... this is the error message when I click on spambot countermeasures, found in the ACP, General Tab section.
Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\Exception\InvalidArgumentException' with message 'The service definition "phpbb_captcha_gd_wave" does not exist.' in /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/vendor/symfony/dependency-injection/Symfony/Component/DependencyInjection/ContainerBuilder.php:871 Stack trace: #0 /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/vendor/symfony/dependency-injection/Symfony/Component/DependencyInjection/ContainerBuilder.php(478): Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\ContainerBuilder->getDefinition('phpbb_captcha_g...') #1 /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/phpbb/captcha/factory.php(48): Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\ContainerBuilder->get('phpbb_captcha_g...') #2 /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/includes/acp/acp_captcha.php(116): phpbb\captcha\factory->get_instance('phpbb_captcha_g...') #3 /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/includes/functions_module.php(674): acp_captcha->main('captcha', 'visual') #4 /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/adm/index.php( in /home/dieselduck/dieselduck.info/forum/vendor/symfony/dependency-injection/Symfony/Component/DependencyInjection/ContainerBuilder.php on line 871
Also, I had done a complete file swap already, so it seems to me pretty obvious the issue is with the database. I will try the tools you both mentioned, and follow up with results here.

It's where it's always been in 3.0 in the spambot countermeasures.

I deleted custom registration validations i had in my old board. Re: spambot countermeasures (captcha) - I was not able to alter due to error messages.

I did a "clean install" using the full 3.1.2 package. The convertor did work this time using the database_updater feature without issues. I did not need to use the STK package as suggested.
I uploaded my modified css and footer and header and they work, and all things - like registration and spambot countermeasures seem to be working well now.
It took a week but I finally upgraded to the latest version, 3.1.2, and have a functioning board that is customized to my site. If you would like to visit, its at http://www.dieselduck.net/forum/

Thanks for all the help; and to the development team; its a great tool for communities.
