Troll Mode

Post by Louis7777 »

It would be great if the original authors or someone else revives this project: Troll MOD
igorw wrote: The Troll MOD allows administrators to mark users as trolls. These trolls will have a big problem. They will be logged out, receive an error, long loading times, file not found messages most of the time. Better than banning :twisted:

The following things will happen to your trolls:

Delay between 5 and 30 seconds.
50% of the time one of these:
  • Blank page
  • Wait between 1 and 60 seconds
  • "Board unavailable" message
  • 403 forbidden http error
  • 404 file not found http error
  • Logout
  • Redirect to board index

It's fighting fire with fire (trolling a troll) but in a really underhanded ("cheap") way.

If this was on a forum I frequented (even if I was not affected) I'd be pissed, and ashamed to be associated with a community run by someone willing to use such tactics.

I don't see anything underhanded about it at all. when you have a troll that you just can't get rid of, then anything short of knocking on his door with a shotgun is a valid method of dealing with him.

Steve posted this many months ago for 3.0.x and I have kept it 'just in case'
stevemaury wrote:Here's a little ditty you can try. What it will do is make the troll the foe of all other users so, ordinarily they would see this instead of his posts:
This post was made by Troll who is currently on your ignore list. click here to display this post.
First, run this SQL to make the troll a foe of all users (only will apply to existing users until run again):

Code: Select all

INSERT INTO phpbb_zebra (user_id, zebra_id, foe) SELECT user_id, N, 1 FROM phpbb_users WHERE user_type <> 2 AND user_id != N AND user_id NOT IN(SELECT user_id FROM phpbb_zebra WHERE zebra_id = N AND foe = 1);
N is the user_id of the troll.

Then make this edit to remove the message (which will remove it for all foes of all users, but if they really want them to be foes, they shouldn't mind):

OPEN language/en/common.php

FIND:

Code: Select all

'POST_BY_FOE' => 'This post was made by <strong>%1$s</strong> who is currently on your ignore list. %2$sDisplay this post%3$s.',
REPLACE WITH:

Code: Select all

'POST_BY_FOE'        => '',
Backup the zebra table first.

To undo this, run this SQL:

Code: Select all

DELETE FROM phpbb_zebra WHERE zebra_id = N;
and reverse the language file edit.

So, no one will see his posts and he will not know it.
Will it work for 3.1.x? (I know the answer id to try it, but I have blown up enough test fora already, and if the answer is a no, then at least I wont try it)

Is banning any better? If you have already decided to ban a person then what difference does it make?

Like the original author said, this is better than banning.

Actually I think banning is the better option. You need to show them the hard way that you don't like what they are doing.

But I have seen cases, where banning actually only resulted in a large load of new accounts that also needed to be banned (sadly, accounts are not tied to a users DNA). If banning does not work, I do think this is a valid method to get rid of the user, the best one being the one posted by HiFiKabin, imho.

you can only ban a username/IP/email

any or all of those can be bypassed easily.

anyone that wants to can use a different username at will
a different IP at will and a different email address at will.

that is why the troll MOD method is so effective. the troll doesn't really realize that nobody even sees their posts etc.,they don't see a reason to keep changing usernames/IPs/emails to reregister they just think they are being ignored and they will eventually go away.

Yes, I fully agree. I am fighting with one troll for 2 years already...BANned 20 times and still does not have problem to come and continue with trolling....

The only way which works for this troll is to delete all his posts just after he creates them. but...sometimes he recreates it 20times or even more!!...so this method is quite time consuming.

I believe that troll MOD could be very effective in these cases...can save many many hours to admins and mods...
