So, is any extension maker even considering making a WYSIWYG for 3.1?

I don't think there will be one coming for 3.1.x. Maybe for 3.2....(someone correct me if I'm wrong...)

That is correct. User brunoais has been working on adding a WYSIWYG editor for something like 2 years now with no end in sight for him. Obviously this isn't something you can just drop into a 3.1 install and expect it to work correctly and securely, which is why it has taken so long although other factors have contributed to the slow progress, including the BBCode parser and real life.

That being said CKEditor is already off the table for 3.2 due to apparent incompatibility with custom BBCodes. And to those saying that "vBulletin uses CKEditor" you've apparently not used their implementation of it to realize it's not a very good one...

Personally I wish you'd scrap the idea of putting a WYSIWYG editor in phpBB 3.1.x. Instead keep the same editor now and just make BBCODE buttons more user friendly for using. Have URL and IMG buttons so they open a box asking for Name and URL e.t.c, so no manually entering it in the post.

CKEditor would be a bad choice. Both IPB and vBulletin use it and people complain of lag with it. WBB use "Redactor" same as XenForo in Burning Board 4.1. But in general they all seem to suffer with issues using WYSIWYG editors (they just prone to be problematic). XF used TinyMCE first, they dropped that because of some things with it.

Plain editors are best like you have now, just impove the way BBCode buttons work

I have never understood the need for one. it is a bulletin board, used for posting messages in a discussion.

other than the ability to post images I see no need for fancy formatting in a forum post.

if you want to create a web page, create a web page and link to it ,
if you want to create a word document then do so and link to it, etc.

just my rant....

Brrr, I hate anything that pops up. I don't consider that more user friendly.

+1 For a WYSIWYG editor extension. Many people are not that technical and have problems with the BBCodes; it depends on the board what kind of people you get.
For me it doesn't need to cover custom BBCodes.
