I've made such a request; for a free-standing facility to provide a 'Like' button, similar in use to that employed by Facebook but not in any way interfacing with FB.
If the Extension is of no use to you, and you prefer already available alternatives, then please go ahead. Why would you want to interfere negatively with what others clearly want?
First off, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have been using the "Thanks for posts" MOD on 3.0.x boards and it seems to be exactly what you want.
You have the option to click the Thumbs Up button, and it will show in each post how many clicked it and who they were. You can even enable a star-rating system that shows which posts were liked most, and a leaderboard of sorts for who gets the most thumbs up.
I have it enabled in testing on a 3.1.x board and it seems to be working well.
I have read message after message here on adding a LIKE button to phpBB, which many of my users keep asking for.
It is clear that many administrators would like this, and it is also clear that hardly anybody can figure out how to do it. Oddest of all is some antagonism in some posts here.
I would very much like a "Like" button that is functionally identical to Facebook's, since everybody knows what it means and how to use it. It should be baked into the standard code, as an option that can be turned on or off as the administrator chooses.
Help ... is there any prospect for this?
PS. After all these years it is still impossible for the administrator to change the default posting/topic listing order for Descending/Ascending. Please, give it to us.
It would be good to have a like button, many are asking for a like button on my forum. I agree it should be built into the standard code. I know there are some extensions in development, but how long do we have to wait?

I am on 3.1.4/5/6 and using anavaro's Postlove. It works perfectly and shows a heart symbol on each post and the number of love-clicks it got - you could easily swap the heart image for a thumb if it means that much
