Not really, but ok I'll bite. How is a MOD, whose edits don't line up with 3.1 at all, useful here, mister 4seven?

its easy to transform and it gives an idea how it works, so this is my part of living in a community and i give my part to it, eg. find things on the net, to achieve something the people are after :D

This MOD that you wrote (because I don't believe you just "found" it...) presents some of the problems already discussed in this topic, one of which is that it copies potentially copyrighted material to one's server. While this isn't prevented by the current attachments system, it is a little more difficult to do so and not a straight path to copyright violations and DMCA takedown notices.

Thanks for the effort though.

in that case, why don't you at least give the user a clue about the fact that it will not work as is and will have to be completely rewritten in order to even have a chance at working as an extension. and since you are being so helpful you could simply create that extension for them since if they knew how they would not be here asking for someone else to do it for them.

I simply love this site, bcs. it contains much genius work, but, to answer Lumpy's question (must laugh, bcs. Lumpy is a dachshund-name in germany) : I am too dumb, to make extensions, i can only give impulses for a solution. Respect the copyright thing itself is (of course) self-evident and integrating that thingie into the attachment system is (theoretical) of course simple, just copy it remotely and make it an [attachment] and insert it automatically in the post, add some magic to the database, done. I can only give a hint to a focal point for remote copy techniques and post inserting. The rest is no prob for an extension-specialist, bcs. as i said: i am to thumb for extensions..

sorry, but that is a load of crap. If you know so much about how easy it is then you could do it yourself.

Has there been any progress on this?

My board is managing with attachments & since I have allowed the uploading of attachments I have had more activity on my forum, it also helped that I posted instructions, members can even add photos from their phones directly from their cameras, I have have infinite storage space on my server anyway, I just keep an eye on the inodes............ however an extension that automatically resize attached images for faster loading times, would be a massive improvement, especially seeing as most people aren't that au fait with using computers anymore, so the [img] bbcode would be a bit of a puzzler to most, I would also like to see a reliable way to post videos, but I'll leave that to another thread lol...

Keep us posted with any progress.

If you have thumbnails enabled then whatever is done to resize images on upload won't affect page load times at all. Page load times isn't really the reason this request exists. It's mostly about server space.

Will the thumbnails automatically fit to the screen size, say if the user is viewing using a smartphone for instance?

On another note, I would rather less server space being taken up to be honest despite having unlimited storage...

Edit:
I just tried it out, tested it on the phone too, I wanted to upload a photo from the phone but the battery went flat, but yes it responds to screen size & it has a pretty border around it too...

Hi All,

I've read this topic several times now and it still confuses me, part of it says release 3.1 WILL do the file size shrinking automatically based on ACP settings but still many others are asking when the requested extension will become available....

I've recently upgraded my board from 3.0.14 to 3.1.6. I did have some code added to my 3.0.14 which did shrink (server side) all uploaded jpg's to 800 x 600 and it worked like a charm. However I can't add the same code to 3.1.6 as it then throws a server error (and I'm not a savvy PHP developer). Hence I started searching for an extension and found this topic.

So my questions is, do I need an extension to do server side file shrinking or should 3.1.6 take care of it?

FYI, currently my 3.1.6 version is NOT shrinking back file sizes no matter what I try...
