Instant login when user Register?

Forgive me if I've got this wrong but...Currently when a user registers, they fill out the form, submit, and they're then taken back to the index page? (IIRC) Where they then have to look for a Login link, then enter more details...

Would it be possible to Login a newly registered user as soon as they Register?

I think, that happens if you set up direct activation without validation or am I wrong?

Filling out the reg page is not the same as logging in so they haven't got to that point yet. Registering populates the database tables with the right information. That needs to then be confirmed by them logging in subsequent to registering so they then get a cookie.

I'm sure there was a mod for 3.0.x but I'll be damned if I can find it anywhere.
