Wordpress doesn't allow the re-use of email addresses. That's the difference.

Geez - so phpBB fails in comparison to almost every other user-account based system out there on this point, and it's because of "email reuse"?

So why not get rid of THAT, since it seems to be a lot less known/compelling/useful/user-centric than the simple notion of a user being able to recover his account without having to email the administrator of the site.

Feel free to open a topic concerning it at the development board. http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/index.php

ok, I posted the request.

http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic ... 81&t=48676

my track record for getting momentum behind phpBB requests like this is pretty much zero; hopefully this one will be different. I hope this is the correct way to lodge a request with the team, it seems like it is easy to get lost in the noise unless someone grabs it and advocates for it.

Really? Please provide a link to these supposedly rejected RFCs. There is a rejected RFC about providing an activated password AND username in the email, which is obvious as to why it was rejected. Then there's this one that had some discussion and then discussion kind of died out:

Yes that's exactly the one I said was rejected for obvious reasons. ;-) Sending an activated password along with the username is not going to happen. Being able to retrieve the username, what was mentioned in this topic, is not the same thing. We don't just reject an RFC for the fun of it.

The other RFC topic I linked to as well as the new one started today, which are for retrieving the username, could see the light of day if properly seen through.

I've read and... no one ask this before:

It would be awesome to be able to recover the password by just entering just the username or just the email address and not needing both. If I put both then it will send just if the username and the email match.
If i put only the email address it will send the password to the email and the email normally tells the username (or am I wrong?)
And if I put only the username it will send to the email. (Sometimes many users have more then 1 email... like 3 , 4, 5 emails all going to 1 and its easier to put just the username and receive the email address on the main email)

Best regards

It is not possible to "recover" a password as it is one way encrypted

I know that. When I said recover the password I mean as it is now. You get an email to write a new one. ;)

Ok, too many words, I developed the extension: http://files.sarov.info/2017/badblock-r ... ername.zip

What is does on password remind:

- If email addresses are allowed to be re-used: does nothing (password remind works as usual).
- If both username and email address were entered: does nothing (password remind works as usual).
Otherwise:
- If username was entered: recovers password by username.
- If username is empty, but email address was entered: recovers password by email address (username will also be recovered, as it's present in the password recovery email).

Developed against 3.2.1, may also work on 3.1.11-RC1 and above (that's when the event used by the extension was introduced in phpBB).

- Unzip the archive in the ext/ folder, so that composer.json is located as
{phpBB root}/ext/badblock/remindusername/composer.json
- Enable the extension in ACP.

@BadBlock

It would be better if you posted it in the Extensions in Development forum so that other users will be able to find it
