Live Chatbox

Post by BriniaSona » Thu Mar 10, 2016 5:51 pm

Is there a live chatbox for phpbb 3.1.8 anywhere.

mChat isn't live, it has a delay. I'm looking for something without the delay.

Pretty sure mchat has a 5 second delay between the user posting and others seeing it.

I want something where the user posts and everyone sees it immediately.

That actually looks nice. But it isn't really a chatbox. That seems to be more of a primate instant Messenger.

I couldn't say whether it wasn't live, or whether it's just a minimum of 5 seconds on the refresh interval. You may care to reach out to the developer of mChat to ask about the possibility of lowering the number. My guess would be that the lower the number, the greater the performance hit on the server and the 5 second minimum was intended to ensure good performance even with large numbers of users.

For me, the 10 second default has been fine - and probably beats the performance of most mobile network chat systems. Everything shows up on other devices within 10 seconds of having been posted. I'm still only using it on a test site, so don't have enough message traffic that there's a meaningful improvement at 5 seconds refresh interval. Even when I push it to the main site with a much larger userbase, I don't plan on going below 10 seconds.

Remember, it's not a 5 second delay on all posts, it's a refresh interval... meaning it refreshes every 5 seconds... so that would be a maximum of 5 second delay. Messages typed just before the refresh would be delivered immediately - at least that's been the case in my testing.

Good luck in finding something that works for you!

The Messenger Box extension mentioned above checks for new messages every 2.2 seconds:

Code: Select all

this.receiveMessagesInterval = setInterval(function() {
    var friend = self.props.friend;
    ChatWebApiUtils.loadMessages(friend.id)
}, 2200)
mChat has a minimum refresh interval of 5 seconds. I don't know the reasoning behind this value, it was adopted from the MOD for 3.0. It isn't something that can't be changed though. ;)

Precisely my experience during the last 7 years of using mChat.

For messages to be updated as live as possible, polling is definitely the wrong technique, which is what mChat and Messenger Box do. You'd have to look for an extension using WebSockets for example: Ignoring the complexity of development for a moment, there's a much greater effort involved in setting up and running such a system reliably from an administrator's point of view. Additionally, most shared hosting services don't support it.

I was using cbox.ws before. But it doesn't support phpbb 3.1. It was exactly what I wanted too.

most hosts do not allow the "live/instant" type chats. they are terrible resource hogs.

not sure why 5 seconds is too long to wait.

I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.
