it cannot replace the productivity of an app.
I'm curious, what exactly do you mean? Can you give an example of the productivity you would be looking for?

Apps that live on your phone will bring you back through notifications. It is the same as the notifications we have here. It creates more engagement.

It's a good part of the reason why Farcebook has taken over in my opinion

I agree. Having a notification on your phone that there is a new topic or there has been a reply gets people coming back more frequently. It also gives us the opportunity to send out messages to all members wishing them a happy Christmas or Wednesday and encouraging their involvement.

I already get notifications to my phone, pad and PC, how many more do you need?

So you just need push notifications and that's it, then?

I think there are a couple of extensions around that do that. Not sure how "finished" they are, though.

I think that this is the most significant advancement we could have as forum administrators. I’ve watched traffic particularly over the past 6 years migrate to FB. Same people discussing who met through my board but now using a different medium. Push notifications bring them back.

The app could simply be notifications that open the browser, not a complete software redesign. The other option is to integrate somehow with FB but I’m sure that none of us want that! However the big stumbling blocks with apps is probably Board administrations might need developer accounts.

Apps are not my field - I run a fly fishing website and design fishing rods 8-) - however I am trying to have an app developed that integrates my website’s daily front page and discussion forums simply for push notifications.

Surely this has been done?

Cheers, Paul

I use appy pie and phpbb works great with it. It's really simple, just put your site URL in it. It's really not needed but if you want an APP on the playstore it works fine and gives you the bonus features.

That's good news, but Appy Pie seems to be a paid service and not that inexpensive for one.
