A push notifications extension? Is it good? :)

Would you consider making it public/paid? Or is it too custom/non-generic for that?

You need at least 5.6... My developer made one for me, but 5.6 is required. But you should think to upgrade to 7.0 atleast too.
I tried upgrading my php to 7.1 and the board ceased to function with a general error.

I now have 5.6 installed and working.

EDIT: solved! :D

I haven't tested that extension, however from its code the requirements are the following:
  • PHP version equal or greater than 7.0.0
  • phpBB version equal or greater than 3.2.0
  • PHP (not phpBB) extension gmp installed and enabled
  • PHP (not phpBB) extension openssl installed and enabled

In modern web hosting services you can choose the PHP version and enable/disable additional modules/extensions like the last two.

And that is where you should be asking your support questions

I'm very interested.

In fact, I googled hard but couldn't find anything on this subject.
It seems strange that in 2018 web forums developers don't think of a way to add push notifications for mobile devices, besides using Tapatalk.

Maybe there is already a way to do that (without having users download an app, even?) and I missed it?

Please help! :D

Thanks in advance.
I'm quoting myself again to bump.
I, and my growing community with me, "desperately" need a way to send phpbb notification via push mobile system.
I cannot afford migration to a web server with GMP library support, and I'm unable to design a system on my own (it is not my job, I'm not prepared), but still I find incredible that no one else found a solution besides using mails and their notification (with some delay), or feed apps for android (still, heavy delay unless using paid version).

Please?

At this point in time, the main limitation with Push Notifications is iOS and their inability to support web notifications. iOS finally has Service Workers, but that doesn't help.

Utilizing this:
https://github.com/lavigor/notifications

I am able to get notifications pushed through users using a PC browser and browsers on Android, like Google Chrome.

However, that doesn't seem as easy with iOS, which is the problem for overall mobile push notification support.

Additionally, it would make sense to have users install a minimize to taskbar plugin for Chrome.

Thoughts?

Maybe at least support for Safari's API would be a temporary solution to the lack of iOS support:

I'm sure you already came to this conclusion, since the last commit was nearly two years ago, but you should consider https://github.com/imkingdavid/push abandoned.

I made some good progress on it initially but the main issue I ran into was that you have to authenticate separately with the forum and with the push notification service. I don't remember all of the details but I was unable to find a good way to handle disabling notifications upon logout, meaning that if a user logged out or allowed their logged in session to expire on phpBB, they could still potentially get push notifications. And if it's a shared computer, this could cause issues if you log out and then someone else comes along and gets your forum notifications. And if the notifications have any details from the topic name or post contents, that could cause a potential leak of information if it is in forum with restricted viewing permissions.

This is something I may consider revisiting when I find some time, but I don't recommend using it for now. Anyone is welcome to take my initial progress, fork it and go from where I left off if you're feeling up to the task.
Don't forget to smile today. :)

I have made Browser and Mobile Notifications extension which handles the cases imkingdavid was struggling with. It's not for free because it has taken tremendous time to make, but on the other hand you have support and future updates included. ;)

You can always ask your hosting provider to add support for it. It shouldn't be no more difficult than uncommenting one line of code in php.ini for them, hopefully they will enable it for you. ;)

I have already contacted them for this months ago (aruba.it), they want 300 € and a much more costly fee for month. :(
