Is there a way to EXPORT user's "Search Queries" from phpBB?

Post by Macko » Mon Jun 25, 2018 7:46 am

Hello, fellow phpBB community members,

As you probably know, you can view the latest 'searches' on your forum. They are anonymous, but it gives you a good idea of what people are interested in finding on your site.

However, you can only see the last few days, etc, and it's just a running list of the latest searches, so not very useful unless you just want to have a vague idea of what's popular recently, and maybe you will notice a few of the same searches, or not.

What I would like to do is have them added to a database so that I can see trends, etc., of what people are searching for. It would be nice if you could see all the search terms in a table over the past week, month, year or whatever, so that you can see what is searched for most often, and can use that data to create more interesting topics or to answer the questions people are searching answers for.

Even just getting it all into a simple spreadsheet would be fine, as you could sort it alphabetically or frequency to see what people are interested in, etc.

We have a dev that managed to finagle a way for me to manually send them all to a file, but that requires me to manually do it, and obviously, there will be overlap, unless I do it at the same time every week, or wherever I left off last time. Not a feasible option, really.

Does anyone have an idea of how to get these search terms sent to a database automatically or something like that? Any out of the box ideas are welcome as well. I already use Google Analytics (and even have some software called 'Keyword Hero' that tries to provide the searches that are now just labeled [secure search] in Google Analytics), but being able to put the search terms that people search for on our phpBB forums into a database would be even more valuable.

Thanks.

ACP -> General -> Search settings -> Search result cache length

During the cache time you can go to advanced search and you'll see a Recent Searches block at the bottom if any (and if you have a_search permission)

You can put an insert in the code to insert the query into a new custom table fairly easily. You can also setup email notifications at the same time where the notification emails can go to a dedicated box for overview by the admin from time to time.
