Sort forums based on groups

Post by MrGaby » Fri Nov 02, 2018 5:31 pm

Hi everybody

Would any of you have seen an extension to order the display of the forums on the index page according to the membership of users to groups.

If the user belongs to the group A, it would have for example a display of the forum A first, then forum B, then forum C, etc ...

If the user belongs to the group B, it would have for example a display of the forum B first, then forum C, then forum A, etc ...

Etc ...

Thank you for your help.

I would like the administrator to assign one or more "favorite" forums for each group. Thus, members of these groups would see their favorite forums at the top of the list of forums on the index page.

What should happen when a person is member of 2 or more groups?

I did not think about it, but we could go to that:
If there is a favorite forum for one of the groups: it appears at the top of the list
If there are several favorite forums for several groups: favorites are displayed at the top of the list, in an order to be defined

And who, or what, decides what is a "favourite" forum for a group? What might be a favourite for one member of a group may not be a favourite for another member.

In my experience members will find what they want without reorganising everything for everybody.

I have nothing against all kinds of extensions being made but I doubt users would really like forums being moved around (with the risk that a favourite forum in Category1 is moved away from other (non-favorite)forums in Category1. There are also subforums to be taken into account.
The extension is aimed at the users' preference, taking that into consideration it seems more logical that a user could define his own forum sortorder rather than presenting his (or her) favourites and having to accept a "biased" sortorder.

And how do you handle categories where one, or more, fora are "favourites" and the others are not.

Easiest option is to install the Collapse Categories extension then users can "hide" the categories that they are not interest in.

Do users actually look at a list of fora? Most users that I know use the new posts or unread posts option to display the posts.

Thank you for your relevant remarks.

On our forum, we manage competitions, and we have formed groups based on regions, and we have forums dedicated to these regions. Hence my request.

We could at least imagine that users can choose their favorite forums themselves and that they are placed at the top of the index page?

With the way in which phpBB is structured this would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, and would place a massive load on the server.
