Russian (Cyrillic) characters are shown incorrectly

Post by Canalia »

I didn't find anything on this topic.

I use Russian pack for my http://www.russiansanjose.org/phpBB2/index.php
My forum's title is in Russian and it looks like this
"Христианская Церковь г. Кэмпбэлл"

but when user receives email confirmation, it looks like this
"Христианская Церковь г. Кэмпбэлл"

Is there anything in configuration I can change to show characters correctly?

Thank you,
Viktor

Hi Viktor,

If you look at the files in the email folder in the language package in a file editor, do the characters then appear correctly for you?

Thank you for quick respond.
I think I found solution to my problem - it doesn't make sense to me, but it worked.

My forum setup to have Russian as default language, but my admin account is in English.
Here is what I did:
- highlighted and copy the forum's title (in Russian)
- changed language to Russian for admin account and saved it
- went back to Title line in configuration and pasted title back; saved my changes.

Although, visually there were no changes in configuration (I just copied and pasted back exactly same title in Russian), but the new account registration after that received email notification with proper looking name of the forum.

I have same problem with my web pages. I chose UTF-8 for encoding of the pages. When I look at the script in the editor, it displays Cyrillic characters as "кая" , but on the web all pages look just fine.
What am I missing?

Thank you,
Viktor

Hi Viktor,

I'm happy to read that you found a solution to your problem.

About your second problem mentioned I think the problem is that you are using a file editor that does not fully support UTF-8 encoding. Which one are you using?

for quick updates (fixes) I use a small text editor provided by my host company; it's not really an editor - just a text window with Save and Delete buttons, which shows my file's guts.

P.S. it's still amazes me how far the technology have gone - I am sitting here in California (it is 7:00 morning) and talking to the guy across the globe. :D
Thanks for your help, friend.

Viktor

Hello John,

Thank you very much!
This program is cool... it has its own FTP.
I've heard about it, but I thought it's just an editor.
And the best part - it does not require admin privileges, so I was able to install it at my work.

Thanks again,
Viktor
