Announcing the future first public 1.0.1-DEV release. (Lite)
See first 3 posts for and screenshots

That's developmental code, to be used on test boards. Use at your own risk.

Well all of this been said, the extension installs "inactive", means you have to set first the options in ACP prior to let all of your users whithout an avatar get an Initials one by default. The ACP is self-explanatory but feel free to ask. Users got an option in UCP which allow them to do not use/have a default avatar, default is yes for all. If the user will set an own avatar the default goes automatically away, instead if the user doesn't want an avatar at all then can opt to NO in UCP.

The extension will work only if you set the Avatar phpBB's ACP facility to allow "remote avatars".

Remember, every change to the settings in ACP will force the all of the avatars to get refreshed to let your changes make effect immediately, due to the images being served server-side cached for two days.

Have fun. :)

Great! Btw, in the code there is a string replace coded thinking about your nickname, can you confirm if using Raul [ThE KuKa] as per the nickname and setting 3 Initials in ACP will result in RTK?

Without that line of code the result is R[K.

Looks very promising!

Question: Do background colors depend on the initials or is it always the same color? If so, is there any chance of adding some randomness or dependency to the background based on the initials?

Like A is always color 1, B is always color 2, C is always color 3, ...
Back to this, now the relationship with Initials is planned and some code is under testing.
Create/calculate background and font colors based on the hash of name, based on a snipped I found at gihub. Credits will be given of course. ;)

Thanks for the good news and the release of the first version. Will give it a try and report back. :)

Edit:

Gave it a first try...

Big problem right after enabling it in the ACP: All existing avatars are overwritten with PIA-Avatars. Had to restore the DB backup I made right before the activation. This should not happen. Will not do further testing until this is fixed.

Thanks for feedback, in fact the extension (being in DEV) shouldn't be used on live boards and I mentioned it here

being the only one who is testing this on a local environment.

You did the right thing though, wisely you made a backup first.
The preliminary step more people who use dev extensions on production should learn from. ;)

I see the issue, I will fix it. Already existing in the code there are the backup indexes created on purpose but not in use yet and the interested query will be enhanced with a more strict check-in. A fixed version will be posted here as soon as I can.

Note: I removed the download link in order to prevent issues to somebody, in case. :geek:

No worries, I'm not blaming you. I knew it can go wrong, that's why I made the backup first. :)
Looking forward to the updated version though.

I mean the background color(maybe).
Instead of 1 main(fixed-editable) color to have random colors for the random names.

but still nice !

Being this the A(dmin)CP, it is for Admins.

Would have been in U(ser)CP otherwise... which is already planned.

Thank you.

just a thought...

what about using css to create the background circle. that would open up the ability to add other things like borders... gradients... etc...

that way it would not depend on external or internal images at all ;)

or does it already and i missed that somewhere

You are missing nothing, that will be not in the Lite version which uses the Web API.
A different approach completely self contained (vendor folder so to speak) - no HTTP calls.

But hey, I've got just two hands (mine) you know. :geek: :)
