Moving from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5

Post by meisterberger » Fri Mar 15, 2019 2:09 am

Hello,
Having trouble finding information on moving from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5.

1). Is it a direct upgrade?

2). If not what is the upgrade / conversion path? Do I have to go to 3.1.x first?

If there's a thread that discusses this I couldn't find it. Nothing seemed to specifically address these questions.

Thanks

https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... /upgrade3/

follow those instructions exactly and in order and you should have no problems.

if you do not follow them exactly you will have problems.

luck,
robert

As I mentioned in your converter topic (not thread - phpBB has topics) - twice:

some users, when upgrading, recommend going from 3.0.x (3.0.5 in this instance) to 3.0.14 first then 3.1.12 and then 3.2.5
because of timeout issues going directly from 3.0 to 3.2. Yours may well go fine straight to 3.2, it may not, you'll only know when you try it.

There are no ‘threads’ in phpBB, they are topics.

IIRC....that thread was all about going from vBulletin to phpBB. Which was accomplished. Thanks.
If there was specific information about going from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5 I must have missed it.

Sure, I guess I can just try it and see if it works.
Thanks again.

Just a reminder of the critical steps to make sure you have BACKUPS (#2 and #3) before starting the upgrade process.

Problem......

Maybe part of the confusion is the Server.
in many of these update / conversion processes, the owner of the forum had the old forum on one server and the new forum is being installed on a new (different) server.

In this case of my upgrade, there is no "remote" server.
Only ONE server is involved. The old server is no longer able to connect to a network. So I'm assuming the entire process will have to be done on the NEW server exclusively.

The OLD SERVER is running PHP 5.2
The NEW SERVER is running PHP 7.2

Obviously I cannot install phpBB 3.2.5 on the old server in order to upgrade from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5

So I assume it will have to be done on the NEW server........(where I cannot install the OLD forum)
But if the installation process ONLY needs the DATABASE, then I can easily install the database on the new server without the old site itself.

so my question is.....

1). Do I need to have the OLD forum fully installed in order to do this upgrade or is it enough just to copy the files onto the new server along with the database? (well, I guess in a way, copying the files IS installing it...it just won't work due to the PHP version)

Alternatively, to do this upgrade from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5, can I just put the database for the old forum on the new server?

I'm inclined to believe that
1). the old forum doesn't have to "work", as long as all the files are present and the database is available on whatever server.
2). The upgrade will work if all the files from the OLD server are copied to the NEW server AND the database from the OLD server is on the NEW server

Can someone please confirm this? (I may be a bit dense and over complicating things, sry)

Yes, be sure to pay attention to the the directions about files/folder that need to be moved from old install to new install and folder permissions.
The NEW SERVER is running PHP 7.5
I don't believe phpBB supports it, highest supported version is 7.2 AFAIK.

Maybe I did a typo. 3.2.5 is running on the new server so it's probably php version 7.2. Thanks
