Maybe part of the confusion is the Server.
in many of these update / conversion processes, the owner of the forum had the old forum on one server and the new forum is being installed on a new (different) server.
In this case of my upgrade, there is no "remote" server.
Only ONE server is involved. The old server is no longer able to connect to a network. So I'm assuming the entire process will have to be done on the NEW server exclusively.
The OLD SERVER is running PHP 5.2
The NEW SERVER is running PHP 7.2
Obviously I cannot install phpBB 3.2.5 on the old server in order to upgrade from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5
So I assume it will have to be done on the NEW server........(where I cannot install the OLD forum)
But if the installation process ONLY needs the DATABASE, then I can easily install the database on the new server without the old site itself.
so my question is.....
1). Do I need to have the OLD forum fully installed in order to do this upgrade or is it enough just to copy the files onto the new server along with the database? (well, I guess in a way, copying the files IS installing it...it just won't work due to the PHP version)
Alternatively, to do this upgrade from 3.0.5 to 3.2.5, can I just put the database for the old forum on the new server?
I'm inclined to believe that
1). the old forum doesn't have to "work", as long as all the files are present and the database is available on whatever server.
2). The upgrade will work if all the files from the OLD server are copied to the NEW server AND the database from the OLD server is on the NEW server
Can someone please confirm this? (I may be a bit dense and over complicating things, sry)
