Text explanation of "Category" ?

Post by pearlchan »

When I create a category I fill out the box which give an explanation of what will go in that category.
Those will all show in the "manage Forum" section of the ACP under "Board Index"
The text of the explanation of the category doesn't show to the public.
Is that how the software is built?
It would be nice to provide to the users guidelines or information as to what belongs in that category and what it's about?
What am I doing wrong? If anything?

That data does not show on Categories, only on fora

That data does not show on Categories, only on fora
But a Category (which has a forum_id) is a special type of forum.
It wouldn't be illogical to have an information field on the forum creation page warning the user that Categories are treated differently and how (although IMHO the documentation is more important and is the first thing that should be consulted).
We should embrace problems, without which there wouldn't be any solutions.

I solved it by creating a Forum for "Explanation of Categories"
And then listing the categories in the reply
How do you change the order of Topics?
Somehow the permissions got all messed up and I can't alter the order of the topics?.
I thought the forum I had to copy everywhere, which was set up properly from default, was what I named "Delicate"
I try to set "Explanation of Categories" to "delicate" and it keeps reverting to "No permissions set"
It doesn't offer me a chance to change the order.
Maybe I had the wrong setting as I created the Topics. Or it reverted somehow? So I have to start all over, erase what's there?
To get it in the proper order. It's in reverse order now.
Thanks in advance for any help

Topics, by default, are displayed in descending date/time order of the last post in the topic. There is no mechanism within the core to display topics in a specific order. Even if you were to manipulate the posting date then you could not guarantee how they would appear as each user can specify the order in which topics are displayed.

So how would I change the order from Oldest to Newest at the top, if it's the other way around now? I'm considered a "user" too, right?
Or If I did that it would be for all Forums on the BB, as I view it?
Thanks in advance for any assistance

No it's not for Guests - it's at the bottom.

You have to remember that the display options are by user so by default users will see the topics in reverse order. Also setting display options to show topics in descending order will affect all other fora.

Thanks for that.
So therefore I can make that setting Global, in the General Board settings, if I care to?
And if the user wants to change that to the other way around, they will be able to?

There is no "global" seeing to do this.

Yes, via Board Preferences - Display options

Yes, via Board Preferences - Display options
But apart from doing that for the Guest user you cannot set that for all other users, unless you edit every user's settings via the ACP

Guests aren't logged in and don't have a UCP but can still change topic and post sort order for themselves when viewing (not sure whether it's on a per page basis or globally).
The admin shouldn't really care about a user's sort order (except perhaps for specific topics/forum but that would require an extension allowing overriding user_preferences).
